Now i am a 13 yr old gamer new to sr (playing muds and
shapcano's wonderful fiction was what got me into it
and also a kind neihbor) And i have just recently
purchased (through a stroke of great fortune) M&M and
Magic in the Shadows. Now as many of you most likely
remember your resources are pretty limited at 13 so
what books are worth getting from here? I'm gonna git
the seattle sourcebook but after that i'm relyin on u!

Your Helps Appreciated,

Seeing as you're new it sounds like you've already picked up quite a
workload... I'd personally say Cannon Companion. I know back when I first
started it was Second Ed and I learned with the core rules book and the
Street Sam catalog. Then Fields of Fire. I have one friend who still those
are the only 3 books he uses to run.

A little down the road you might want to pick up the Shadowrun
Companion...it's a pretty good source but you'd probably want a little
experience in the SR universe before going into that. Depends how experienced
you are with gaming in general too for that matter...

Welcome to Shadowrun (and ShadowRN), Aaron. Hope you have a good
time... you have the misfortune (or perhaps fortune) to be coming into
SR at a time of great upheaval :) (The age-old publisher just closed,
and a new one is struggling to be born. I get visions of Father Time
handing over his scythe to the baby...)

Anyway, as for books, you do have the core rulebook, right? I hope
so... nothing's gonna make much sense without it. I'll try to suggest
a few books that might not be your first choices, but are still good
ones to have. I'd get the Corporate Download if you're interested in
knowing about the SR Megacorps, and world in general. Matrix is a
great one, not only for Deckers (hackers) but for finding out about the
changes the future has brought. I like the SR Companion for the ruiles
options... you might want to get the GM screen if you like Critters.
I'd go on, but you probably have a limited budget :)

And hopefully you meant New Seattle, not the old one. I personally
think the old one is... uh, not to my liking? Yeah, that's
diplomatic... I'd mail you my extra copy for the price of shipping. I
mean that... if anyone wants it, gimme a ring. It's just bugging me.

As a starting GM I got New Seattle and never looked back. You should also
look into getting Cannon Companion; there are a lot of people who don't like
it, but the only other options are going with just the gear in SR3 or buying
the SR2 versions. Also, the Companion is _very_ useful for pretty much
everyone.

After that, players may be aquard and ask to play riggers and deckers, in
which case its worthwhile getting The Matrix or Rigger 3, both or which are
useful even to non-riggers or deckers, but in no way essential.

Seattle Sourcebook is a good buy to get an idea of the layout of the city;
New Seattle less so, IMHO, and though normally I'd just recommend people
get both you're probably not in a situation where you can do that easily :)

I think the best advice is to look at what you want in your campaign. There
is not much point in buying the Matrix books when you don't have anyone
wanting to play a decker, for example, or Rigger 3 when vehicles hardly
ever feature in your adventures except as transport from A to B. Especially
if your resources are limited, it's best to decide what you want to do, and
then look at which books will come in handy. For instance, if you want to
run adventures based around the Yakuza, then the Underworld Sourcebook
would be an obvious buy, perhaps followed by Blood in the Boardroom.

Although it's not up-to-date anymore (another thing I need to do one of
these days...), I'll refer you to my SR Product Reviews web site at
http://www.xs4all.nl/~gurth/shadowrun which has short reviews of nearly all
the SR books. The idea, in part, is to answer questions like yours by
letting you know what's in each book :)

> I also forgot is there any eq books out fer sr3 like
> the street sam catalogs and stuff ?

Cannon Companion is the current "gun book," which is worth looking into
when/if you get bored with the combat equipment in the main rules. It's not
an absolute must-have, though, so you can easily play without it.

Ah, there's no better way to get e-mail and pretend you're liked than
to claim you're giving away something for free :)

But seriously, that was no sooner posted than spoken for. No more
book to be had here.

Welcome! Sounds like you've made good choices so far. My suggestion would
be to pick up a setting book next. Decide where you want your runners to
be, and there's a selection of places to go.

New Seattle would be a good choice since the city is basically the
default setting for the game. For older books, look for Tir Tairngire if
you want a good place to run, and I personally enjoy the Germany
Sourcebook. I used to own Native American Nations 1 & 2, but I was very
disappointed in them... I still own Tir nA Nog, and while it's a neat
setting, runners aren't likely to live long in that country, and it's got
a very different feel from what you're probably used to. And you can
always run in Chicago! In that case, I'd say you'll need to pick up both
Bug City and Target:UCAS, because some major things went down in there
recently. You can either play during the midst of that crisis, or run in
the aftermath... either way, it makes for a very impressive setting.

For general stuff, I also recommend Corporate Security Handbook for nice
advice on what to throw at your runners, and an old 1st edition book
called Sprawl Sites, which has tons of building maps and plot ideas to
run with.

Hope that helps!

You probably should have mentioned that 70% of these books are out of
print, and damned hard to find. Just a thought :)

I've found several OOP books on Amazon.com lately. Worth a shot, anyway.

LoL! That might've been helpful. Though some of these you can find used or
even new if you're lucky in book/hobby stores. I actually found an Earthdawn
sourcebook at a Barnes and Noble here (not saying where here is just in case
it's still there) not 3 months ago.

Earthdawn isn't hard to find- FASA still has it in stock! The sourcebooks
are OOP, but they never sold out their initial printings on most of the
books...

Ah, but I think I have an extra copy of Sprawl sites....if anyone is
interested. It's not in bad shape either. Also, I do believe I have an extra
copy of the maps that came with it(?). If you're interested, let me know and
I'll dig around to see if I can find it.

Sprawl Sites has maps, but they're part of the book -- if you have an extra
copy, that means you've got a bunch of loose pages :) OTOH, Spawl Maps was a
supplement for DMZ that had eight separate, full-color maps, printed on the
US equivalent of A3 size paper.

On the whole, Sprawl Sites is a much better supplement than Sprawl Maps,
and that is saying quite a lot :)
