Brainscan, Runners Ex Machina
I have 'runners going through this at the moment and I've just run into a
hideous speed bump.
The team have been through the Arc' already and came in prepared this time.
This mean's that the team's decker is wearing his heaviest armour (which
was "liberated" from a nasty, but well equipped, mercenary unit) which
isn't a hideous problem considering where the fighting's going to be taking
place...
However, the difficult bit is going to come when he comes round. The armour
is equipped with a simrig, Sony CB500 and Sim & Vidlinks. It isn't going to
take much self-possession on behalf of that 'runner to get video and Sim
footage of Sherman Huang using Ronin's gun to drill Aneki...
So what happens if he does? And what happens if he tells Huang?
He does have a few surprises up his sleeve, including a cybergun and a
rather powerful tasked Earth Elemental.
So what do I do?!?

The elemental is the easiest problem. It should be scared or just outright
difficult for it to enter the arc. On a normal day the arc has I think a
background count of 1 maybe 2. And of course this isn't a normal day. I
think it shot somewhere to around 4 or 5. Maybe 6. Even that should be
enought to screw with a powerful elemental.

Maybe with the decker being slightly distracted with what's going on at the
Tree of Might, Huang actually searchs the runners and disables to equipment.
Unless of course they were able to leave guards for the meatbodies...

For the cybergun, have a random guard with Huang at all times that happens
to do his job and take a bullet (or 15) to protect Sherman.

Is this anyway helpful?

The Elemental is sitting astral guard on the Deckers, Background count is
higher than average but the area it was brought in was not a toxic zone...
The Background count actually works in the Elemental's favour as it limits
magical threats to it.
Its instructions are unfortunately rather clever, basically if he or the
elemental are interfered with it's to materialize between the decker and
threat, unjack the decker and slap a stimpatch on him. The Decker has
backed this up with a program set-up in his headware which switches
everything on in the case that he's forcibly jacked out.
The Elemental then has two further services unassigned.

I have at the moment I think to hope that the Decker is distracted, or
rather that the player is distracted, Magaera's dump isn't going to count
as a forcible jack out, for the purposes of the program, the jack is still
in... at least that's what I'm saying.

Yep, although 5 three round bursts might cause a single guard some
difficulty... maybe three or four.
If absolutely necessary I can step O.C. and inform the player that I'm not
going to rewrite the entire metagame from that point forward so that Huang
is dead (or I can use the "Return of the Father" switch).

>Is this anyway helpful?

Yes, but...
I don't want to force him into a situation where he's going to die for
being clever... I can be evil... but perhaps not that evil.
I still don't know what to do if he's really clever and plays unconscious
while recording the whole thing and then ten weeks later sends a message to
Huang whilst preparing to run to Ares or Novatech or Aztechnology...
Does Huang pay him off? Hire 'runners? So many possibilities... so few of
them easy to deal with.

My suggestion: Just go with the flow man. If the
runners pull off what you suggested then let happen.
Remember, this is your world. And anything can happen.

Anything....

Who is the mage that summoned the Elemental? If the
mage dies then there is no elemental.

Now, from what I have always gathered, spirits have a
hard time distinguishing tech from other tech. Unless
the players (of the summoning mage and the Decker)
have sat down and made sure the elemental knows which
patches are which. Oh, sure, it reaches into your
pocket and pulls a patch....Too bad it was a tranq
patch......

As I said, anything......Have fun with it. And if they
manage to out do you then let them enjoy it.....For
now....
