Well, the sugestion of The Mage of the Realms is quite unusual. But for me
it's placed on wrong assumptions.

First: spell barriers are NOT living beings. Yes, they share the connection
with the astral plane, both are entities there. But radiation affects living be
ings by the ionisation of their tissues, breaking their chemical bonds and dama
ging the genetic material. For all that I know spell barriers don't have real m
atter in our plane (our meaning the one of the mundanes, not wanting to offend
my fellow mages), so they can't be affected by radiation.

Second: even that this method works, I would have some doubts about going to
a place where a "great amount of radioactive material" has been left for some
days.
