Hello,

I was looking for something in the way of rules to cover a PC/NPC bashing through doors
(running to it, shoulder forward, in the heat of melee combat)

Anyhow... the rules pretty much cover cars breaking through barriers (though using those
rules nobody could charge into a cheap door and hope to break it down)

And the rules cover melee attacks against doors (ie: punching a door does (STR)M damage to
the door, resisting with unmodified barrier rating... you can beat a cheap door down this
way)

But I was looking for something abit more... if anybody has any rules that might cover
something like this (or maybe I was missing something that was already there)

And if there would be an 'attack' roll... what would those dice consist of?
Rolling:
skill: can't see how melee/unarmed combat would help beat up a door
reaction: Can't think of why your reaction would help you here... its not
moving in any way
mental attribute: none of these would make sense in beating a door in
quickness: maybe if the door was opening and closing and you had to
'time it right' to hit it... but otherwise no.
strength: this makes more sense than any of the previous ones, but
just how are you using strength when it comes to crashing in
to a door? Its more of a 'your speed and your mass versus the
door)
body: this maybe makes the most sense, what do people think about
it? representing your size and mass versus the door... should the
bashing PC roll BODY dice in the form of a melee attack of putting
the shoulder to the door?

And then the power level... I'm either thinking (BODY+STRENGTH) or the average of
(BODY+STRENGTH). (There is also using just body or just strength)

If you use BODY+STRENGTH: then a troll can pretty much run and break on through almost
anything, possibly even reinforced concrete walls... even an average human can bust down
most doors (all stats at 3).

If you use the average of BODY+STRENGTH: then a troll can pretty much break on through
"Reinforced/Armoured Glass" and maybe "Structural Material" (barrier
ratings 8-12) while an average human can break through "Cheap Material" and
maybe "Average Material" (barrier ratings 3-4)

Is that a fair assumption of what a PC/NPC should be able to do by taking a running start
at a door and putting the shoulder to it? (the purpose of making the attack test is in the
event that the PC/NPC doesn't break through the material on sheer 'Power Level' alone)

Any thoughts/opinions/rules people might have to share?

thanks,

Clint
Augustus

According to Augustus, on Wed, 25 Oct 2000 the word on the street was...

> melee combat)

Those rules already exist: just use the Breaking Through Barriers rules
from page 125 of SR3. Basically you compare the attacker's Strength against
the Barrier Rating of the door, and if it's enough to bring the door down
to one-half its original rating, it opens. Thus, a character with Strength
6 will need to bash twice against a BR 4 door to open it -- the first
attempt lowers the BR to 3, and the second to 2, at which point it opens.
OTOH, if the door were BR 2 to start with, a single bash by the same
character would open a two-meter hole in it -- that's to say, the door
splinters instantly.
