I'm going to be building a motorcycle for a (non rigger) character soon,
and I'd appreciate advice. I've got 100,000 nuyen to spend on it, and I'm
not particularly good at min/maxing. What sort of modifications are good,
and which are a waste of space on a motorcycle? And which would get the
character pulled over by the cops?

Hey Keith Duthie, email me the specs that you are looking for ... give me
some ideas and I'll see what I can whip up for you ...

I'm not sure - that's why I'm asking ;-) The character who will own the
bike is a combat mage[1], if that's any help.

I didn't think you could get vehicle empathy without having the VCR gear? I
could be wrong on this one (as I usually am)...

IIRC, the edge only works if you are physically
driving a vehicle and not jacked into it.
ie: it doesn't work if you are using a VCR at all.

Okay, using ¥100,000 as the basis. Here is what I've come up with for your
combat mage ...

Using reverse engineering, a ¥100,000 vehicle gives the builder 2,000 design
points (this presumes nothing higher than what is currently available on the
market that is easily attainable ... like walking down the street to
Autozone and buying).

Chassis Components .......................................... Design Points
-- Racing Bike chassis ........................................ 10
-- Autonav 3 ...................................................... 50
(allows the mage to do other magical tasks, when not in combat situations)
-- Datajack Port ................................................ 25
-- Improved Suspension II ................................. 16
-- Standard Armor (2) ....................................... 100
-- Enviroseal (Engine) ........................................ 30
Total Chassis Components (DP) ........................ 256

Power Plant Components
-- Gasoline power plant ...................................... 5
-- Speed increase to 220 .................................... 200
-- Accel increase to 15 ...................................... 10
-- Economy increase to 16 km / liter ................... 100
-- Load increase by 40 kg .................................. 4
Total Power Plant Components (DP) .................. 319

Knowing the pilot is going to be a combat mage is why I've installed a Pilot
system .. it frees him up from having to make the Handling tests when he is
heavily engaged in combat situations or when his attention is elsewhere than
on the bike.

Electronic Components ....................................... Design Points
-- Pilot (2) .......................................................... 50
-- Remote Control Interface ................................ 40
-- Sensors (1) ..................................................... 50
-- Anti-theft (9) system with standard shock system ... 110
Total Electronic Components ............................. 250

Total Design Point Cost = 1,524

-=-=-=-=-

The Bike .....

Handling: 1/4
Speed: 220
Accel: 15
Body: 2
Armor: 2
Sig: 2

Autonav: 3
Pilot: 2
Sensors: 1
Cargo: 1 CF
Load: 28

Seating: 1b
Entry Points: open
Fuel: Gasoline (15 liters)
Design Points: 1,504
Template: Racing Bike

Setup / Breakdown Time: n/a
Landing / Takeoff Profile: n/a
Economy: 16 km / liter
Cost: ¥75,200
Reference: n/a

Other Features:
Anti-theft system Level 9 with Standard Shock System (placed on seat)
Datajack Port (This would allow your mage to see Sensor information on a
helmet with a HUD.)
Enviroseal (Engine)
Improved Suspension II
Remote Control Interface

Okay, I did not use all of the ¥100,000 budget, but I'm pretty happy with it
as it stands ... so what to do with the savings of ¥24,800?

This bike is going to have a Optempo cost of ¥7,520 a month to keep it up to
SOTA ... some of the cred could go there ...

You could consider placing a ward onto the bike ... in theory, a ward could
be shaped (perhaps requiring some design time to do) ...

Enjoy Keith,

Oh, and Keith, I am going to be posting the bike on HHH, in the rigger
section as the 'Suzuki WuJen.'

Nope. You have to be in physical contact. Remote Operation won't work but
jacking directly into the vehicle or physically driving it will allow you
to utilize the Vehicle Empathy edge.

Page 32 SR3Co:
"Characters with this Edge seem to understand vehicles better than most
people and can coax improved performance from vehicles simply by being in
physical contact with them. Whenever such a character is in physical
contact with a vehicle (either through manual controls or jacked into the
vehicle), reduce the Handling of the vehicle by 1."

Actually, you're both wrong, to a degree. Vehicle
Empathy works whenever you're in direct, physical
CONTACT with the vehicle. Jacked or not, it doesn't
matter. The only times it doesn't work is if you're
controlling it by remote.

And yes, for once, I looked this up to confirm my
recollection. :)

I may forgo the remote control unit, but on the whole I'll probably use
this (probably with minor tweaks - I'll let you know what I use in the
end).

Hmm. An expensive hobby ;-)

I was thinking perhaps an elemental or two guarding it, perhaps.

Thanks for going to the trouble of putting a whole bike together. I'm
still interested in any cool or exotic modifications which would be fun,
though ;-)
