I was glancing through a 1995 or 1996 FASA catalogue a week or two back, and
I saw the Cal Free State Sourcebook in it. However, the cover picture was
different to what my copy has. Instead of the Kraken, boats and
flamethrower, the book appeared to have buildings, armoured vehicles and
desert on it. I also remember another book in there (can't recall which
one) also had a different cover picture to the one I have.

Anyone know why this is so? Are there different printing runs with
different covers? Or were the actual books not yet out when the catalogue
was made, and the cover art changed after the catalogue went to print? If
so, then where is/will the artwork that was on the front of the Call Free
State Sourcebook (and the other book), as I haven't seen it since?

There are not, AFAIK, two versions of sourcebooks.

The catalog was published before the cover of the book had been decided.
They know the book was going to be coming out and wanted to include it in
the catalog, but the book hadn't been sent to the printer; perhaps the cover
art hadn't been finished, or perhaps they hadn't decided which art they
wanted on the cover.

When the book went to the printer, they had decided to use different art
than was in the catalog, because it made a better cover or for whatever reason.

That's my take.
