Ok, just a quick and dirty look at it. YES it is worth 18 bucks
for the book. There is a ton of ideas and information in this book, as
well as at least four new settings for adventures (near feudal Northern
Cal., Japanese Dominated/Racist as hell San Francisco,
Water-hungry/economically polarized LA, and the magic-rich, terrifying
Mojave Desert). Lots o stuff, and better written than some recent
supplements.

Others have mentioned this but here's my two cents worth. I just got it
and read it cover to cover. I say it was well worth the money. IMHO it is
one of the better sourcebooks they have put out recently. I may be
biased because I am familiar with area, at least the 1990's version of
it. I am going to suggest changing our campaign location to California. So
yes, I say get it.

Hmmmm, did you enjoy the part about Compton and the surrounding areas as
much as I did? I thought it was a real trip, IMNSHO.

I paid about 26$ for it (isn't living in Germany great :-( ), but I still
think it was worth the money.

Like the late NAGNA, it starts giving you a brief history overview of CAS,
then discusses the parts/areas/whatever-is-the-word of CAS, and then
(although I haven't read so far) some Critters and discussions of local
groups. I haven't seen city maps, but the area maps are quite good (the
map showing the whole country even in colour :-).

It offers hooks en masse, from "re-union discussion" over "all that
metahuman scum" (CAS is _really_ racist...) to a possible war with Tir
Tairngire and/or Aztlan...

Yup, it's worth the money!

Yes, SR has had a history of fragging with California, it makes it hard to
run a serious campaign based here. Why don't they go back go fragging with
Chicago, or some new place?

Give it time. Rob was talking about probably including
Chitown as one of the locations in the 'Feral Cities'
sourcebook - not sure whether that's the working title
or just a descriptive one, but it basically just means
cities where order and central government have
collapsed and don't have control - so even five/six
years don't look to have done much to help or improve
the place. :o)

BTW, someone is paying $20,00 in the CalFree sourcebook in Eby. Is it
such a rare book that people are willing to pay more than the cover
price even after FanPro sank the place ? I recently bought Bug City
for less than $10.00 and Target UCAS for $5.75 ...

Hey, I wrote a lot of that book, I'm glad to see it's holding it's value

The same goes with Lone Star sourcebook. I dunno, perhaps both books
had small print runs.
I´ve read a lot of the LS sourcebook, and it´s a very nice book with
plenty of good info, but it´s not worth $30+ plus S/H, for example.
(At least not according to my budget)

It's widely reported that the Fredonian Aeronautics and Space
Administration was not always known for making the most responsible
use of the Fredonians' tax dollars.

I'm not Anders, I won't attempt to speak to his particular situation,
but I do know folks who wrote material for Earthdawn and also got
stiffed by FASA.

Well, you know there *are* contract labourer laws, and if you didn't have a volunteer
agreement - if there was anything even remotely resembling a "you'll get paid if you
do x work for us" statement, you can sue the asset-holders for back-royalties. Not
saying this to make trouble, but I hate to see people get stiffed for their work. Either
you did it for free, and it should remain free, or you did it to get paid, and should get
paid.

It got complicated. I did a lot of work on the project, and so did a few
other people, I actually did not expect money from that project. Then the
line editor changed, and the new guy wanted major changes and it done asap,
so we decided Laurie would do the final rewrite. But a lot of mu concepts,
including Hestaby, made it into the final cut.

They weren't the quickest of payers, no. However, I remember receiving a
check from FASA for some of the stuff I wrote last year or maybe in late
2003 -- long after I'd given up on ever being paid.

Phrases to that effect are usually in RPG writing contracts, is my
experience.
