Hey everybody, I've been working on this concept for a kind of combat biker,
and was thinking one really cool idea would be for him to be carrying
caltrops that he could throw behind him if he's being chased on his bike. I
was wondering what would the effects of a caltrops be on a vehicle? Would you
just rule that if they don't succeed the quickness test then the tires get
blown and they have to make a crash test? That seems to be the way I would
think to handle it...

(also I'd imagine if the character botches throwing the caltrops they could
actually blow his OWN tires)

Sounds good to me. Though you'd of course have to take in to consideration
the armour/body of the tyres and if they're runflats or not. Caltrops are
one of the niftiest inventions known to man, and they've never been
superseded. If only their power could be used for good instead of evil.

I would sudjest that if the character fails his
quickness check and falls on the caltrops,he should
get one automatic stress point for every turn that the
vehicle is not immobilized, even if he passes the
crash test. The logic is that the crash test prevents
the character from crashing with something but the
vehicle would still take damage because of the flat
tires.

According to Sinabian@***.com, on Thu, 22 Mar 2001 the word on the street
was...

You could let the character make an open Quickness test to throw the
caltrops, and let that set the TN for the opposing driver's test to avoid
them. I'd make that last one a vehicle skill test (defaulting to Reaction),
not Quickness, but other than that, I'd agree with you: fail the test and
immediately make another one (against the vehicle's Handling) to avoid
crashing. Should this second test succeed, IMHO one or more destroyed tires
is Moderate damage to the vehicle. (Not having tires won't stop a car from
moving; it'll just be harder to steer and not go as fast due to reduced
friction between wheel and road.)

Very good call. Those caltrops would probably lodge in the tire and continue
to shred it the more the tire was driven on...on TOP of that I can tell you
from experience it REALLY frags up a tire to keep driving on it after you
blow it without fixing it. Not to mention the alignment and the axle. Perhaps
if you have the blowout, and continue to drive. Then don't get the car fixed
the car should suffer a +1 to the handling as well...?
