I was just wondering if anyone has ever run a really HUGE campaign.
My players like epics for campaigns, and I have come up with a monster!
But keeping track of all the events, effects on corps, etc. is going to
be a real pain in the *ss. Wondered if anyone had any tips to simplify
this?

Thanks,

Nitehawk

I'm playing in a variant world based in a galactic empire, but with
shadowrun rules (sounds a little corny that way, but it really is cool).
Right now the group I'm running with has broken into a space launching
facility in order to place a component on a repair satellite.

With this satellite the people we are working for will take over some Sub
Orbital Lasers and blow up the Arcology that the planet wide
police/fascist overlords control the planet from.

Is that epic enough for you?

Alex

I was hoping someone had hints for keeping track of the PCs effect on
history, even minor stuff could count down the road....

I've got an epic world saving campaign. I keep track of it
by making notes everytime I get an idea. Then I put the
good notes in the computer as part of an outline with just
enough info to jog my memory. And, I don't let the outline
take over the campaign. If something needs changing I scrap
the old ideas and go with the new ones. I've got little
piles of paper and a pretty big file on my world. In other
words "No", I don't have any tips to simplify it :)

I sat down and said to myself I wanted to run a big, epic campaign, never
having done one before. I sat down and plotted out the campaign in 5
"seasons" (using the Bablyon 5 model). [1] I then broke down the seasons
into 7 adventures each, most of which I just gave a name and jotted down
the plot points involved. When I get closer to each adventure, I actually
design the adventure, using whatever strikes my fancy at the moment.

For instance, the current adventure "Tirs In Heaven" was just labeled with
"intro to Elven Politics - use Arielle Mountainbourne as the hook." I
first envisioned it as some sort of political imbroglio with the players
stuck in the middle as they went first to Tir Tainrgire and then Tir Na
Nog. But then I read the adventure in Super Tuesday and adapted it.
Instead of waking up next to a McGuffin, they woke up next to an elven
woman they knew. But before they woke up with anmesia, they had seen her
before recently at a party, mentioning she was visiting friends in Tir
Tairngire.

The "Secret" really nails down to: start with the ending and work
backwards. As you plot backwards, remember to put seeds and rumors for
the future in as you go. They're be more and more impressed with you when
a seed you planted a year ago finally comes out and bites them on the ass.

Oh, and it helps to intersperse "non-arc" adventures in, so the players
aren't always looking for clues.

[1] As the game and the TV show progressed, I'm startled by how much my
game is resembling the show, even in ways I hadn't intended. Aina
appeared, and someone later told me she was "Delenn". The White Star and
the Sesession from the Earth Alliance will both appear in my game, though
in very different forms and I had the idea long before they showed up on
TV.

Hey! Don't go giving away all the details of what I haven't seen yet, will
you? Now if only RTL 5 would hurry up with those reruns so I can see how
it continues where they left off...

There is one thing to do (actually two things) that helped me
immensely when I ran my last `big' campaign: 1) keep notes of EVERYTHING
that went on during the run of the day. Something unexpected that you
adlibbed may become very important to the campaign. This can give the aura
of good planning many times. Second is related to this in that you
shouldn't plan everything. In David's `B5' campaign, he states that many
runs weren't really planned beyond a general plot note. This also helps
immensely, letting you use the aforementioned unexpectedness......

Another way to keep notes on the game is to send out e-mail to the players
(if they have e-mail) after the game sessions with a synopsis of the last
game session. I've done that twice now, and I think I'll try to keep doing
that for future game sessions.

The other thing I do to give the players a sense that they're playing in a
real world that goes on with and without thier help is a newletter. Similar
to the Seattle News-Inquirer that's found in some of the adventures, my
paper is more of a regional (CAS) newsheet. Each issue (given out between
adventures, not game sessions) contains six blurbs and the first part of two
stories. Things that affect the gamers and things that the gamers affect
can be hidden in the news.

For example, I had foreshadowing of a beauty contest (Miss World) coming to
town in one MediaBlitz!, and a session later, the contest was part of the
run. Game-time-wise, it's about 1-1/2 months later and they've just found
out that the winner of the contest was killed or in intensive care. A
tie-in to this that directly affects the gamers will take place in about 2-3
game weeks from now. [Bill: now you know]
