What I find more interesting than the lifespan of a single
character is the lifespan of a single campaign. I had a campaign that ran
continuously for nearly 6 years. Most of the characters and many of the
playeres cycled in and out over the years, but there came to be so much
in-game "future history" that it was interesting to see how the players
became part of the world. Especially interesting was how the seasoned
veterans coached the newbies on the ins-and-outs of campaign history.
Listening to my players explain long-past runs, epic screw-ups, vicious
double-crosses, and moments of high drama to disbelieving newbies will
continue to be one of my proudest moments as a GM.
