Can you use karma to raise spell forses, or is there a way to award force
points?

Well, you need a spell formula first of all. When you have got that you
can learn the spell. So, I'm pretty sure you can't raise the force of a
spell, but you can always learn one at a higher force, and as you can
cast any spell on any force up to the learned force you could say you
raised it. Just donīt forget that spell formula.

IIRC in SR3 there's a provision that you can re-learn a spell to up the
force of the spell, you basically have either find/buy/steal/design the
spell you want to relearn, then learn it as if it was a new spell, then
pay the difference in the karma cost between the old force and the new
force.
Sorry I don't have the page number offhand, I'm too lazy to dig out my
book :)

By the book, you can only increase the Force of a spell by re-learning it
at a higher Force, at the full TN and Karma cost. So, if you know
Invisibility at Force 2 and want to upgrade it to Force 5, you'll have to
roll against a TN of 10 and pay 5 Good Karma for it.

This does not make much sense to me, especially not if you know that some
sources mention that magicians in training are taught low-Force spells. So
why don't all magicians know plenty of spells at Force 1 or 2 and also at
Force 5 or 6?

Anyway, I use a house rule that says you subtract the Force at which you
already know the spell from both the TN and the Karma cost. For example,
upgrading from Force 2 to Force 5 would cost 3 Good Karma, and you roll
against a TN of 8 to learn it.

Hey thanks Gurth I think I'm going to use that house rule you were talking
about.

I allow magicians to raise the force of spells by paying the difference in
karma despite what the book says. However, unless you can find a GM as kind
as me :), no, you can't.
