Something from Real Life (TM) that I found quite interesting recently
relating to credsticks, or at least certified credsticks, was the "Octopus"
cards in Hong Kong. I was there over Christmas, and bought one, as they're
very handy. They are a magnetic proximity card (they're a little thicker
than a credit card, and the same size, and they function by waving them near
a sensor). They have a stored value, which you can top up at machine
located at subway stations (either cash, or direct from your bank account
electronically). They can be used on trains, busses, ferrys, coke machines,
fast food restaurants, and various other places. I envision that certified
credsticks function in much the same way as Octopus cards.

Pardon, but any particular reason they're called "Octopus cards"?

I wondered about that myself, and was told that it was because they reached
out to many things at once, like an octopus.
