If you posted a concise summary of the last thread, then I wouldn't
have to go looking for it too.

If you state that this is a summary of a long thread which it would be
nice to avoid repeating, then perhaps you could just consider it an
informative post. Please do.

I came up with a "Fission Chainsaw" for Fenris back in the days of SR1, after
watching "Phantasm II." Although, it hasn't been *used* it years. ;-9

It was simply:
+1 reach, (Str)D dam <--adjusted for SRII/III

YMMV,

If I would have to make a damage code for a chainsaw it would be (Str)S with
a +1 reach. I wouldn't make it all that more lethal in damage level than a
Monofilament whip, which is supposed to be the
much-feared-on-the-streets-something-people-on-whisper-when-talking-about
weapon. I know that a lot of the deadliness from a monofilament whip comes
from the power of the attack (14 if I remember correctly), but still...

One thing to note though, is that chainsaws only LOOK impressive. They're
EXTREMELY unwieldy and are about as good as a butterknife when it comes
to cutting through bone. The damage it does to fleshy bits, especially the
lower abdomen, can be quite impressive though.

Then I would rule that Impact Armor is doubled and Dermal Plating are also
rated double.

So you weren't brave enough to ask how wolfy knows that either?

When I converted a chainsaw from Cyberpunk 2020, CP assigned it the same
damage as a shotgun. I can't remember if I gave it any reach bonus. The
end result was reach +0 or +1 10S Damage (I didn't make strength a factor
because the damage [IMO] comes from the motion of the chain, not the
swinging of the chainsaw ...)

I'd agree with that. Now if it was a regular saw, that'd be different. The
only thing is that the stronger you are, the better you can control the
chainsaw, and the deeper your swing becomes. I don't know, maybe a damage
code of (STR+7)S or something like that.

I wouldn't base the damage on strength. The chainsaw is actively causing
damage and strength and skill are used to guide it. I've used a chainsaw
quite a few times (grew up in the mountains of Colorado and helped dad cut
down trees for firewood), and pressing down on it didn't make it cut any
faster. It just heated up the blade, and bogged down the engine.

I would also recommend a high minimum strength requirement if anyone wants
to use it as a melee weapon, to overcome the gyroscopic properties of the
chainsaw.

As mentioned, a chainsaw would be unwieldy in most people's hands, but then
again there are those sculptors that do some cool stuff with a chainsaw, so
maybe you just need a lot of skill. Did anyone read that comic book 2000AD?
(now that it -is- 2000AD I'm sure they're changing the name) One of the
characters in that had a chainsword, which is pretty much what it sounds
like, a chainsaw built to be used as a sword. It would still be heavy and
unwieldy, but would have better balance and be easier to hold in the right
position. I think Warhammer might have also ripped off the idea.
