I was just thinking: in character creation the rules
say that you can spend spell points and conjure
spirits. If that's the case then couldn't you spend
them to summon an ally spirit? The rules in MitS
doesn't say that you can't.
And another thing: would you let a player spend spell
points to begin the game as an initiate? (Personally I
find the trade worthwhile. You begin with only 7 spell
points to distribute for spells so you trade some
pretty powerfull spells that you could get on the
beginning for the initiation).

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

P.S.I couldn't have access to the net for some time so
i say it now: I am sorry for the victims of the
terrorist strike and I hope that now we can all see
the resolts of the politicy of hate and abuse from the
part of the superpowers, their multinationals and all
the other vermin that plague upon us all.May we learn
that with guns, arrogance and Bizantine politics we
cannot build a future that we'll all be proud of.

A friend of mine had a startup character with an ally spirit. I don't see
any problem with starting as an initiate either. After all, by spending
points on these things the character is weaker in other areas, so it
balances out.

To me it seems about the only worthwhile way to spend Spell Points on
spirits at character creation. Buy anything else, and you're ripping
yourself off... So long as you also spend the Magic Point that goes with
summoning an Ally, I think that it would be fine.

There is an optional rule in the SR Companion (I think) that mentions doing
just this. In my view, it is fair enough, as Initiating costs a lot of Spell
Points. OTOH, if I were trying to play a low magic campaign, I probably
wouldn't allow it - Metamagic is extremely powerful.

It's on page 31 of the SR3 Shadowrun Companion, under the heading
"Resources":

"In addition to the standard uses for Spell Points during character
creation, gamemasters may allow player characters to use Spell
Points in place of Karma Points in order to begin the game as an
initiate, to summon and maintain an ally spirit and so on."
