Mailing List Logs for ShadowRN

Message no. 1
From: Paolo Marcucci <marcucci@***.TS.ASTRO.IT>
Subject: Character Generator
Date: Thu, 22 Dec 1994 08:48:33 MET
Hi all,

After reading about new Tom Dowd's job, I recognize there is a large
market for a character generator program for Shadowrun. Well, it is
already here (er... almost).

On my www Shadowrun Archive there are two of these programs: one, the
SR Assistant, is a dos utility that, besides a simple (_simple_) char
gen program, provides a quick matrix generator and a skillsoft cost
and size calculator. The other is brand new, runs in windows and should
be more complete. It is called, surprisingly enough, Character Generator
v2.0.

If any of the esteemed readers of this list wants to give it a try and
reports me of any bugs or inconsistency about the programs, I will be
very happy.

Thanks for the listening :)
Paolo

Well, that's the way things should go. When all bugs will be ironed out,
I'll put it at cerebus. Meanwhile, in the next day (ehy, maybe right now)
i'm going to put it in ftp://ftp.oat.ts.astro.it/incoming/srcg.zip
That location is higly floating :) so be kind if you don't find it there
after two hours from now... (ehehehehe) No, it's a joke. :) That location
will be valid until all bugs will be discovered and a release will be ready.
Maybe until the end of the world....

Thanks, Paolo

Yes. this is a fixed release.

I've just sent the gear.dat file definition to another fellow user in the US.
Maybe you want to split the filling work between you two...
the address is:

Jason Formo - form0011@******.tc.umn.edu

The physical adepts part is to be developed fully. There are powers to be
added and other thing to be fixed. Just have some patience :)

I prefer to keep the source in one place at the moment. When most of the
things will work reliably, it will be no problem.

Paolo Marcucci (Probably mispelled) put out a really good one on his
websight...the trouble is he hasn't finished the print code...but he is
working on it...the good thing is that is can be updated....a couple of
friends and myself completed the thing with most everything...the nice thing
is you can play around with making a character and not take 3 days doing
it(i.e. figuring out how much essence..skill...magic points...etc
)....Mamoulian

You've finished the equipment/items list or the print part too?
If you've finished the print part, let me beg you for a copy! I love the
program, but without being able to print, it's not worth a lot other than as
a databaser.

Just be patient a little more.

BTW, I'd like to receive an e-mail from everyone that got the program up and
running and from everyone that had problems (Out of memory...) so I can
understand better the current status of my work.

Thanks, Paolo

Patience is a virtue... i seem to have none of. :)

Ok, here's mine.

No problems to speak of. It runs great, but... (yes there is always a but)
suggestions:
1. Printing, of course. :)
2. Have the override function cancel out all restrictions.
As it is now, when the override is on, one may increase already purchased
stats/skills above the limits. However, if you have already spent all of
the point normally allowed, then you can't buy new skills or spells. I
don't remember if it is the same way with purchasing things with money or not.
This makes entering NPC's and even expierienced PC's a little harder. Not
impossible, but harder.
3. Make a "Character Sheet" format for display. I don't know how hard this
would be, but it would help in checking for mistakes or ommisions. Also, if
possible, make the data updatable from the sheet as well as the seperate
sections.

BTW... if you chose to sell this as Shareware (updated version, of course),
I for one would buy it. It is <too> useful.

Thanks for listening.

hi peoples...

yes, i know i promised a first alpha/preview of the generator for
about this time, but sometimes shit just happens..:-) my real-live
job took quite a bunch of my available time and so i had to put the
project a little bit back...:-(
But the responses I got contained alot of very useful ideas and
comments that will make the program even better and more useful.

This mail is just to assure you that I am still with it and all
people that were asking for a preview will get one as soon as I think
it is possible to send out one. For that event I would need an
ftp-directory where I could put it in. Sending out via mail is
impossible for me, bc the archive with all the needed libs is quite
large and would take me days to send via email (not the best solution
as i only have a dial-up connection)...

I know there have been several character generators written over the years
in various languages and for various platforms. I was wondering if anyone
had come up with a web-based cgi character generator for Shadowrun that
can be accessed with a web-browser and that returns an html file
resembling the standard Shadowrun character sheet.

Uh... I guess I should be the person more apt to answer this :)

Yes, it can be done. But, as the chargen in windows, it will take a very
long time to work... and the current level of interactivity give by
browsers is simply not enough for this kind of application. Maybe IE4, with
dhtml and data-binding...

No reason it couldn't be done, except perhaps for sanity. Do you
know the time and bandwidth involved? It'd be faster to generate one
on paper and fillin an HTML form than to load the many screens
needed for this....

In afterthought, with a Java calculator, there is no reason it would
require all that many screens..especially if you used the priority
system....it could all be created on one webpage....hmmm....

Maybe it's time for me to learn java. :)

I'm almost positive that this has circulated around the list before, but
since I'm a relative newbie, I'll ask again. Does anyone know of a
character generator that could be downloaded off the net? I saw a kick ass
one for Earthdawn on the Strands web page, but I haven't been able to find
one for Shadowrun that was really good. I saw some threads about the Pocket
Secretary '98 that Adam did, but i wasn't able to read that much about it,
and it was taking me forever to download it (sorry Adam, nothing personal:)
So if anyone could direct me with like a URL address or something like that,
it would be appreciated greatly. Thanks.

Paolo has one at http://www.interware.it/shadowrun, in the Windows programs
section. You have to make sure that you download the full version (Which
is about 280K, IIRC), and then the 2.8a update, which is even smaller than
that.

The good news: We're working on a new version which is going to be in PS
'98 which will have the new features people are asking about.

Better news: The PS '98 install files couldn't *get* much bigger ;)

And we are toying with alternate methods of deployment which should speed
up the process..

The actual URL is

Note: you might want to wait two weeks, because then there will be a
final release.

But unfortunately FC seems to be a tad slow from time to time..:-(

a word of warning, for some reason certain computer systems can't run the
nsrcg; it refuses to run on my system (1gHz, 256meg ram windows ME) but it
does run on the system of one of my players (866mHz, don't know ram, was
running win 98se but now running win 2000).... this problem seems to be
only on a very few machines and random. I couldn't figure out why it won't
run on my system and the creator of the program couldn't figure it out
either.

Another word of warning, it's EXTREMELY ram hungry, if you don't have at
least 512MB I would highly suggest you kill everything else before you
start using it, my wife's computer's got 320MB and still can't have
anything running or it'll crash due to lack of ram, on the other hand on
my comp with 512MB I can have as many things running as I want and it's
fine....not sure what the problem is but it's a weird one.

Hmm... it runs fine om my 400MHz with 64 Mb, while Outlook and

Dunno, my regular one is a 1.4 T-bird and has 512MB with winXP Pro and
runs fine no matter what I've got open, wife's comp on the other hand is
a 400 K6-2 with 320MB running WinXP Pro and fights it if anything's
open, it did it just as bad with 98SE and WinME on it.

perhaps it's that it wants a certain percentage, and the more you have
the larger that number is even though it's the same percentage

There is a program named depend that you can get at www.webattack.com
you might want to run this against the program on the systems and
compare the results - it will show you all dependencies.

I have not done it because I use the xls chargen sheet one of my
players designed a while back.

You wouldn't want to send that file to me personally would you?
