That's true too, it's not fun if you get to roll up a character every other
night because they all get killed. IMO you should strike a balance between
danger (and therefore the chance of having characters get killed) and
survival chances. We've been playing with the same characters for three
years now, and they've only really been nearly killed twice -- the first
time was in that urban brawl adventure, they got kicked and torched by the
dragon; the second time was when they ran into Aztechnology "senior
technicians" who used sensible tactics (as opposed to the players' "stand in
the open and shoot at the enemy" method of operation), but both times they
managed to pull out, and after a few months' healing time, were once again
kicking ass.
It's only natural that you protect your character -- after all you've
probably invested lots of time in him/her, so you don't want them killed.
But I'm also saying that IMHO you shouldn't start to whine if (s)he does buy
some agricultural real estate.
