Read my text: I was *not* flaming anyone. There. I'm sorry if what I said

On the topic of "illegal" characters...

I usually use several "house" rules when creating characters (several of which
have been adopted by other local SR gm's). Probably the most common of these
is "Ignore the 4,3,2,1,0 stuff in archetype creation; as long as your priority
points sum to 10, I don't mind how you split them, as long as you clear it with
me." {I have the second printing hardcover, which includes the "sum to 10"
line.} The other is that the cost to be a metahuman varies by race: 4=troll,
3=dwarf, 2=elf, 1=ork. {I saw this idea on gmast a few years ago.}

I'd like to know what other "house rules" people use for character creation.

One problem I keep encountering concerns mages and tech. Several times, we'd
love to give a mage lots of spells, but that also gives the mage lots of nuyen.
And frequently we'd rather not have that much tech/nuyen for the character.
We are using the higher costs from the Grimoire, but we'd rather not use the
tech/force table in the grimoire, as it seems to simply penalize mages for
being mages (they've already spent 3 or 4 priority points on it). What I'm
looking for is a way to somehow split the tech/nuyen from the tech/force.
Anyone have any solutions?

BTW:
Oh, as far as my character's concerned? I used magic=4, tech=3 (for spells),
att=3, skills=0, race=0... I didn't use any other rules variants. Our local
SR rules wizards can't find a thing wrong with it. Character conception?
After the initial surprise, followed by my explanations, no one's accused me of
not thinking it out completely. The seeds for the character concept are in the
Grimoire and the 'Secrets of Power' trilogy.
