I seem to remember a brief comment about the 'Mainland Chinese Republic' or
some such. I've tried to remember what book it was in, but failed. From the
brief comment I got the impression that the Communists had some sort of
counter-revolution throw them out of power.

I lived in China some 2 1/2 years. We really dont need more OT threads on
the list.

Not as far as I know. The consensus seems to be that there's a core that
remains nominally Communist Chinese, though the further you get from
Beijing the less the leaders act like Party officials and the more they
seem to be warlords (see China pre-1930s). It's effectively balkanised,
though how far that went is probably personal taste.
