After reading the recent press release about Microsoft's acquisition of the
Vatican I started wondering what the computer system and programs
protecting the Vatican in SRII would be like. Any ideas?

Right now I'm thinking about using it in an adventure involving vampires,
the catholic church and metahuman rights activists.

REALLY? Wow, the catholic Church must be in real deep doo-doo!!

My deepest hope is that the pope will goblinize into the
stupidest troll ever and the whole Catholic Church apparatus will crumble as he
forgets how papal slippers are to be properly put on. (Personal
views only, no offense intended for all of the catholics out
there... You are entitled to your opinions, I to mine) :)

COPYCAT!!! :)

You got this idea from my post about "Baron" Zbjigniew Yanacek
aka the archetypal nosferatu, who posed as a Vatican-sent
vampire hunter! I _WANT_ full credits! :)

(Seriously, if you need any help with the adventure, I did
something like that once... Contact me!)

In Aztlan, I think Fastjack makes a comment that the Jesuit subsection
of the Vatican is NASTY with a capital boom, as well as stating that many
deckers are or received Jesuit training (the whole education thing). I
imagine it would be very well guarded, but would hide black ice very deep
(much like all the other religions, it cant be known how bad they need to
keep secrets)

Mnimum? A UV-15/15/15/15/15 host spreading Catholic propaganda :)

My guess is that they'd have got blue of green security, with just a bit
of Access ICE, in the public areas where people can go to Matrix church
services (thriving market, that :) and not much else. I can't really
imagine what the Vatican would have to hide...

But with your adventure, you may want to put in a few trapdoors to orange
or probably red hosts with the secret agendas on them.

"Can't imagine what the Vatican has to hide." Look out, Chummer! Take
the blinders off! The Vatican has the most extensive collection of art
and other treasures in the world. Also, a SR GM might want to go with
the whole Illuminati conspriacy thing which would mean a massive plot to
control world events would be hidden in there somewhere. The Catholic
heirarchy is one of the most secretive since the Knights Templar. You
don't think the computer system is going to be well protected? Just
something to think about....

what about all those pornography archives?
Think they've scanned them in on CD-ROM yet?

The vatican my not have some heavy stuff, but the sylvestrines (which may
fall under vatican jurisdiction) ought to have loads of stuff, mostly
'was it really a miracle or just magic' type files, and a few more on
who's been bad and who's been good, and who's excommunicated, and some
more stuff on politics in ITA, and still more stuff on secret
society/save the world/bad corporations/sponsors/corporate payoffs to the
vatican/who's donated what/and who's trying to destroy the world, and
what are we going to do about it. Good way to drop the threats stuff on
someone...

And they store those in their computer system? I don't think so... They
most likely have a computer running their security system, but I for one
would not hook a security computer to the matrix if I could avoid it. Bury
the system somewhere inside the building so the decker has to physically
get into the compound before he can jack in, and then make it a rigger-run
system just to annoy the decker a bit more. Or use one-way datalines
toward locks etc., so the central computer can send "lock" and
"unlock"
commands to them but cannot receive anything back => no jacking in through
maglocks or vending machines.

Okay, missed the point..... The location of those treasures, and other
vital info would probably be locked inside one of the top five, if not
the most secured computer system in the world. The Vatican has, at its
disposal, one of the most highly trained counterterrorist teams in the
world. It stands to reason their computer system would also be top of
the line, eh?

An organization that has been around for almost 2000 years and nothing the
hide,
I kinda doubt that. Try looking in "Black Madonna" for some ideas. Yes its a
novel, but we're looking for ideas, not rules 8-)
