OK, here's another little tidbit for the kiddies.
How are you all handling clonal technology?
We know it exists thanks to the medical treatment rules in the core
rulebook, but how advanced is it?
Can SR cyberdocs actually clone a viable metahuman?
How about recording brain engrams and placing them in a newly cloned body?
Is this blood magic?
Is this cybermancy?
Does the clone have a soul/essence?

Currently I have been playing that there is limited clonal technology.
The methoc used for cloning is that the cyberdoc must grow an entire body,
harvest the wanted parts, then vatjob the rest of the tissue for reuse. (I
mainly use this ruling for sheer shock value and gross-out effect! ;-)

"What do you mean that's my body in that vat?!?!?!?"

Here's my dilemma.
A powerful mage NPC in our campaign has been atomized in combat with a
termite hive.
However, before he was killed, his body had been cloned from a tissue sample
taken by Lone Star while he worked for them.
Just for kicks and giggles, I decided to bring this PC back as a ghost.
Penthisil (the NPC ghost) was a good friend and mentor to several PC's, and
they'd like to bring him back to life if possible.

(Hang on it gets stranger!)

How should I handle this?
Before you all say it can't be done, what is a ghost if not a free spirit?
And free spirits CAN get the possession power.
Why couldn't Penth, with a major ritual, be reunited with his body?

Or should I just make the ghost an evil free spirit and have it take control
of the PC's bodies? <evil grin>

Yeah, go for it. It's possible. You're the GM...

Hmmmm...You know this sort of thing could become quite the munchkinized thing
but...I don't really think there is any problem with the astral form simply
jumping into the clone body..However..I would probably make the mage relearn
ALL of the spells he had before becoming one of the living impaired..I would
further require the ALL of the spells learned in his prior life be learned
before any new ones be learned or created..I would not even allow on the fly
spell creation of anything other than previously learned spells until all of
them had been relearned...My reasoning is this:

1]cloned body..cool..should be an *almost* perfect fit for the astral
form..so why not be able to inhabit the vacant body..

2]because the cloned body is not *exactly* identical to the one the astral
form used to inhabit all spells in memory must be relearned as the astral
form is now wearing new and slightly different meat..thus changing the
overall aura while casting on the physical plane..[I suppose I would allow
free access to all the previously knows spells while astrally projecting]..So
since the overall aura has changed, the spells won't sync up because the
caster no longer is completely familiar with his own aura while on the
physical plane..I would drastically reduce the ammount of karma and time it
would cost to relearn all of the old mystical arsenal but it would still
cost..I would require the same of summoning spirits/elementals a couple of
low level critters would probable go free before he would be back up to snuff
on this one as well...All in all it should be a pretty good Role playing
oportunity..

3]The reason I would require ALL the previous spells be relearned before
learning any new ones is..If the new old guy hasn't quite gotten the hang of
slinging spells in his new bod how could he possible learn new spells???

4]I think also I would make a max amount of time the astral form would have
to put on some new meat before it would be too late..Something like magic
rating in months..After this period the spirit would have basically forgotten
what it was like to have to breath and such..

Keep in mind, Ganite, that this IS an NPC we're talking about. Steve's my
GM, so I know how he thinks. We would *NEVER* be allowed to do something
like this as a player... Would we, Steve??

Ah well, just a comment there...:)

I realise your group is in a slightly different situation..However, I don't
see why a PC couldn't accomplish this little miracle..Since if a player likes
a particular PC they are running there is no reason not to reward some prior
planning to keep the character in the game..Of course I would ONLY allow this
sort of thing IF the player had his PC make arrangements WAY ahead of the
demise of the character..AND..The PC died while the astral form of the mage
was already out of the body..None of this "Oh..I go astral just before I go
unconcious and My DocWagon Plat..Should vat me a new Bod Shouldn't it??" Very
deliberate agrrangements would have to have been made for me to allow
this..Afterall it would be a simple thing to reproduce the PC starting stats
and equipment when generating a new character..Which can happen alot if your
GM allows you to stay in the same character Archtype...

I agree, Granite. Although I really can't ever see our GM letting us do
that... It'd be too easy... <sigh>

I wouldn't exactly call it easy to have a mage run around that can'tsling
spells the way he used to..If I were doing it..the process would be anything
but easy..And it would cost a ton of karma..Not nedfully as much as it cost
to learn everything originally..but it would still cost...
