Matt Wagner is a really good [god, is that awful english :-]
writer/artist. I'm a big fan of Grendel, and Mage is one of my favorite
series. Kevin Matchstick is a great example of a Physical Adept
[Increased Strength, Iron Skin, Increased Reflexes, and a hellacious
weapon focus in a baseball bat!]. For fans of Matt, he's coming back,
having finally found a home with Jim Lee's Wildstorm Studios {and before
I hear any Image moaning, you're thinking of Rob Leifield's part. Jim's
studio has put out some good stuff in the last few years, especially
Astro City, Leave it to Chance, Strangers In Paradise].
For a take on playing a hitman in an org crime family, read any of
Garth Ennis' books [this is one twisted S.O.B.]. Try HITMAN for a Pulp
Fictiony, Gross Point Blank take on the life of a hitman, it's
hilarious. For something [but tstill with Ennis' twisted sense of humor]
read the DARKNESS. This could be an inspiration for a mage hitman [abeit
a really sadistic one] in a campaign, and his use of spirits. Don't try
to immitate the powerlevel [The character would have to be an upteen
initiate grade guy to start, and he'd probably scare all your other
players away ], just the feel. Horror, with a little humor. Who says
Toxics can't have fun :-].
Hellblazer would give you a good horror feel to introduce into a
campaign, so your players just tdon't denegrate [that's my word for
today] the mysterious and excitement of magic in the world around them.
John Constantine could be a Burnt Out Mage, with more Magic Theory,
Conjuring Skill, and Balls than many experienced mages. [Mundanes can
use Conjuring theory, in an attempt to ward themselves and summon Free
Spririts they know the name of; they just might have a LITTLE bit of
trouble trying to deal with the spirit when it shows up, probably pissed
off, without magic. but that's John].
And AMERICAN FLAGG is definitely got the punk attitude. I love
using Somnambutol on my out of control players [MMMMWWWWWOOOOWWWWW!!!!
Player--SNOORE!!!]

Yeah, I liked Hellblazer.

One that seems to have been missed is Frank Miller's "Sin City" books. I
_loved_ those.
