After everyone is within the incredibly famous hidey-hole, K walks up to the
door, doesn't touch it, pulls a whistle on a chain from around his neck, looks
up over his shoulder behind him, turns around, blows the whistle, starts
motioning -something- to "..come a little bit closer .." (you're my kind
of...), then shows the "Halt, that's good" sign, then blows the whistle
again...

Moves out of the way quickly enough, just in time for the relocating slag
material of Chernobyl, now with newly mixed quick setting concrete, to dump
all over the site, sealing in our would-be list.terrorists to their own
fate...

But what fun would that be! Besides I didn't say my jacket was ONLY
carp proof! Besides Gurth's stairs are legendary. :)

Hmmm It appears that K has turned into a Toxic Shaman. I mean he did just
get a radioactive pile of slag to move itself and use a smother power on
Gurth's Stairs. Is there somehting you havent been telling us K? HMMM??

Like that's a problem... It only makes the stairs a safer place to
hide, and it won't stop anyone from getting out (or in, if I let
them). Don't you think stairs that are bigger on the inside than
on the outside have alternative access points?

Ah but Gurth, that is what the Radioactive waste material is for. The
pandynamics of interferon particles makes such extra-dimensionsal access a
problem at best. And if any of that access is magic, well let's just compare
it to the Doctor's Tartus. Sure, it goes places and whens and hows, but the
controls are totally whacked now and no one, least of all the Dr. (that'd be
you in this case) can get it to go where you want it to go. And Heart
Spirits...bah, forget it.... 8-P

TARTUS? LOL! What's that stand for?
Time and Relatives torment us spontaniously?

It's T.A.R.D.I.S.! Time and Relative Dimensions In Space.

Actually, the older the Doc gets, the better he is at controlling the thing.
In Patrick Troughtons day, a short hop was considered to be from the moon to
the earth if he was lucky.

In the days of Peter Davison, he could manage the other end of the street.

By Sylvester McCoys day, he could land it when and where he wanted most of
the time.

Ah yes, but he also finally had the focus enough to fix that blasted thing.

You definitely are as far as I'm concerned, dumping radioactive

The interaction of radiation with magic is unknown and never quantified. It
probably won't screw up the magical exits. Furthermore, the doctor's Tardis
has been repaired several times and the current one is fully functional and
the Doctor can get it to go anywhere he wants. Finally, all the magical
protection in the world won't stop us using the trap door out to the sewers.

Well, judging by the gist of the thread, maybe the beryllium atomic clock
didn't get hooked up correctly after that little New Year's jaunt in San
Francisco...?

But at least the chameleon circuit's fixed sorta, so it now looks like a set
of Dutch stairs, instead of a police box anymore.

But someone still has to explain to me how Gurth got a hold of a Type 40 TT
capsule.... (unless Gurth is Dutch for "doctor"?)

:-)

The 40 TT was old-tech back in the sixties, Jon... Gurth's stairs is at
_least_ a 2000 XXX. :)

Yes, but we won't talk about that American traversty, will we? It had
it's moments, but there are some things that just should never have
happened.

Um... let me think. The water rushes in, and fills up to the water level?
Oops... Gurth, is your home below sea level, like a lot (well, some) of the
Netherlands? If so, we might have a problem here.

So? My house is some 300 meters above sea level... Even the Netherlands is
_mostly_ above sea level, and a few meters is all it would need.

They're the best place to hide from thwaps, starting flame wars,
and other nasty stuff. IIRC it got started a few years ago when I
typed something along the lines of "*gurth hides under his
stairs*" in a post of mine that I felt someone would thwap me for.
Since then, other listmembers have started using those same
stairs as a hiding place as well (David Buehrer was first, I
believe), and Bull and Spike redecorated inside some time later.
Now recently, Keith redecorated outside, as well, but I'm looking
into cleaning that up...

(Oh, and despite some nasty rumors going around, it's not a
spiral staircase :) They're straight, then turn 90 degrees right,
and go straight again.)

It all started when Gurth hid there once when a flame war started.
Since then, everyone moved in,renovated the place, fitted the dimentional
expander and lots of comfy cushions, and made the carp proof shielding
impenetrable....

It's a very long running inside joke...

Now I can imagine about 2 or 3 RNers sitting under stairs, each with a
laptop and frantically
typing e-mail, not aware of the fact that they are right beside each other
and could be discussing

There are stairs in the house I'm in now, and there's a mini-bar under
them.... Heh, this could interest some
people :) .

Well, I don't know exactly the story of Gurth's Stairs (tm); but I have been
reading all sorts of posts about them for several months now, so I can tell you
that they're an anti-carp sanctuary, used mostly by folks with bad puns to avoid
horrible THWAP-pings. So many posters on this list use them, however, so the
stairs were locked and sealed with the password of (first) Gurth's True Name and
(then) Gurth's True Shoesize. The stairs are also larger on the inside than the
outside, thus allowing several dozen RNers hiding space. Unfortunately, the stairs
are in a near-condemned state because of the incorribable nature of the folks who
hang out inside them.

How's that, oh RN elders who actually know the secrets of the Stairs?

|Ahem...who is Dr Who?

And there I was thinking it had made it to every country in the world.

It's the longest running sci-fi programme in existance...
(Started in 1963 I think)

It revolves around "The Doctor", who's a Time Lord zipping and popping
around time and space in his TARDIS, foiling the evil plans of the Daleks,
Cybermen, and various other baddies....

Maybe it has...It's only that I receive 5 channels only... (But I'm in the
minority...). A situation you probabely can't even imagine...;-)

Why? Britian has only ever had 4 channels until last year when channel 5
came on-line....

And a lot of people opt not to bother with cable or satalite TV.

Just like Star Trek, only with a plot, interesting characters and an
operating budget per year less than that of ST:TNG's budget per episode.

Yeah. That was sarcasm. :-)
