Ok, since I'm the resident conspiracy theory expert as of late, here goes...
First off, Dunkie wasn't killed... He managed to get ahold of the
Doppleganger Project that Renraku had been working on (from the first book
of teh Secrets of Power Trilogy), and he also, being a Greater Dragon, can
occasionally see glimpses of the future, and knew what was coming, so he
created a Doppleganger of himself that was blown up. Dunkie's now living
in Tibet, waiting for the CEO of Renraku to show up so he can have a light
snack.
The actual assasination attempt was pulled off by Aztechnology, with the
help of the summoned horror Vejigorm, Destroyer of Dragons.
