I was in a local gaming store this week and I saw 'DMZ' a ShadowRun board
game. Is this game any good?

Is NAGNA worth obtaining or is the info in it reprinted/covered by another
source book?

Is DMZ any good? In a word, NO.
It is a wargame for Shadowrun combats. It is not quick to play, quick to learn, or
fast to set up. It is 95% as complicated as Shadowrun combat itself (but
different, so you still have to take an hour to learn the rules), and I don't see any
reason to use it as opposed to normal SR combat, even for mass battles. I
suppose the maps and counters might be nice to have, so if you can get it for $4
or so, it might be worth it. Maybe.
If you like complicated wargames, there are better ones out there. If you don't
like complicated wargames, don't look at DMZ.

I haven't re-read NAGNA is a long time, I'll let others comment on it.

If you enjoy Shadowrun at all, I would suggest you steer clear of "DMZ". I
bought it with high hopes (and a little cash) several years ago, and found
it to be very distressing. It's rule system is complicated to learn and has
very little to do with the Shadowrun RPG. That is the biggest drawback for
me-- I wanted an integrated option for vehicular combat and instead found a
stand-alone game that paled beside the one I was familiar with.

Just my opinion...

Yes and no. DMZ is kind of a nice boardgame, but it's too complex IMHO
(wait for a Plastic Warriors release that should simplify things.
Playtesters wanted, but only if they promise on the grave of their
grandmother to also _file_a_report_ with me about their experiences...)

DMZ is a Shadowrun version of BattleTech's BattleTroops boardgame, and
BTroops is a lot easier and faster (and more fun) to play. DMZ has overly
complicated rules for calculating TNs and stuff, which slows the game down
immensely. It also suffers from having a totaly different rules system
than SR, so you have to start learning it almost from scratch.

The only thing rated lower in the SR product survey last year was Sprawl
Maps, I believe :)

The stuff about Chicago is out of date, and if you want info about
California, buy the CalFree sourcebook. For the rest, it has basic data
about UCAS, CAS, and Quebec (and the cities New York, Atlanta, and Quebec
City), so if you're thinking of letting the players roam the continent
this might be worth buying. If you want to keep them in Seattle (or
wherever), I don't think you'll need to bother hunting it down.

NAGNA has some usefull info in it keep in mind however that it's
A)outdated (Chicago is bug free, not a bad thing if you want to start
your game when the bug bomb drops or don't want your players to have the
info in the bug city books) and B) that the writing style of SR has
changed since then (there no matrix coments in the book). If your
planning to run a game in one of the citys detailed, except Chicago,
picking the book up probably isn't a bad idea. And yes DC is a hostil
enviroment for shadowrunners (profitable to).

This is what I did. I sent the players on a run across North America (New
York, then Atlanta, then Chicago, all of which are conveniently covered by
the NAGNA), and let them roam across Chicago for a few days. Then, when
they were in a warehouse in a certain area, KE troopers came to seal off
the area, preventing them from leaving *grin*
Anyway, the map of Chicago in the NAGNA was very handy, because it meant I
didn't have to use the one in Bug city just yet -- I'd kept the fact that
I owned that book secret until after the bugs broke loose in the game...

There are some, but not many. They're in the same font as the regular text
so you might look over them without really noticing.
