I suspect this question doesn't have a single answer, but I'm hoping
that some of you can at least give me some rules of thumb to go by.

I've been looking at some old canned adventures and thinking about
upgrading them to the current ruleset. Mostly it's pretty
straightforward, recalculating dice pools, updating gear, etc, etc.
The part where I'm foundering a bit is in changing the old system maps
into the new abstract systems. Since each section used to have it's
own color rating, what should I base the new system on? The CPU's
rating? An average of all the ratings? And now that utilities are TN
modifiers rather than acting like skills, does anyone have any
suggestions as to what factor I should use to bump up the numerical
ratings for the system?

Or is the whole thing going to have to be more of a "by guess and by
golly" approach, where I should just say, "hmmm, this should be a
cakewalk/challenge/suicide run, let's make it a <insert appropriate
rating here>"?

Any wisdom ya'll can impart would be welcome. :)

Well, That last part is the best approach. You have to pretty much redo a lot
of the NPCs from start, or your players will keep wondering when the real
opposition is going to show up. For the Matrix, decide on your Matrix book
system geometry, and then you could do the system die rolls on Color/
difficulty based on how you read the original material.

Heck, taking an adventure from a source intended for 3rd ed is still going to
involve some tweaking and filling out, so you aren't missing much. If you
like your results, it might be appropriate to put your conversion notes on
your website so others might not have to re-invent the whole wheel.

I have developed an excel spreadsheet (nothing
spectacular) that takes all of the system information
and comes out with some numbers for the matrix set in
3rd edition rules. The only hard part is working out
the Trigger Steps and the IC.

Interested?

Sure, every little bit helps. :) Send it to my e-mail rather than the list, please.
