I've been working on this "Everything you wanted to know about
decking, but were afraid to ask..." guidebook for my Shadowrun group
for a few weeks. I have a single copy in hard copy and am about to
convert it into .pdf and share it to the rest of the world. However, I
find myself rather hesitant to do so.

Why? Because it contains a good many pages that are copied from the
Shadowrun texts/materials. And I know from looking at it that this
"guide" could constitute a major copyright violation if it were
distributed - it's more than just a few quoted paragraphs.

The guide itself is about 20 pages and it's intended to be a
GM/Player guide to decking so, of course, I did a
large amount of photocopying and editing in order to get the
"important" parts of decking as concise as possible
(Tables/charts/some descriptions, etc.).

So, basically, I'm bent over backwards over a barrel and was hoping
someone out there had an idea of who could be contacted at Wizkids
about whether or not this little guide could result in me being
accused of copyright violation. If anything, I wouldn't mind editing
it so that it could be distributed because the decking rules are
pretty difficult to wrap your head around without someone with
experience to look over your shoulder.

Mike Mulvihill <mikem@************.com> is the contact for legal/licensing
stuff regarding Shadowrun. Rob Boyle <info@************.com> might also
want to/need to take a look at it, too, but start with Mike.

If you do decide to let others have copies of this I would love to have a
copy. Personally if your not selling it I don't see how it would be a
problem. Plus I've already bought 3rd edition, matrix and target matrix
(your source for the copies I assume) so its not like fanpro would be
losing money from me.

But they do have a clause that says that you can't reproduce any of that
stuff on websites, I would assume that covers stuff like this as well.

Here is something you can do, before making it publicly available,
contact Rob Boyle (info@************.com) and ask for permission
before doing anything. This way you know whether the guidebook you've
made is okay, or not, for going public.

Given that I'm an American college student in the year 2002 majoring
in Computer Science, I'd like to avoid ANY event that might
invoke the use of the words "copyright", "DMCA", "digital",
and "FBI"
in the same sentence. ^_^

Now that doesn't seem like an attitude that a true decker would have. :>

yeah ... two chances to get caught by that system - either pure luck, or
they are looking for you anyway. As long as the people at NSA have to read
through those tons of mail themselves (oh, I forgot telefaxes and the other
stuff they seem to intercept), and yes I know they filter them first, it's
impossible to really track all email-communication. And I won't even get
into non-english language mails and stuff like that ...

Nah! A true decker would just have added the line:
Which makes it a good job that they're never going to catch me really!

Write the message in Arabic and use those words in it...

your forgot "and encrypt it" ;)

That should be enough, yes. But even if that mail contains real info -
it's eating up finite resources. A day only has 24 hours ;)

So you bypass this problem in sending the file directly to the person...

In effect for proving that the person indeed has source books that you
pulled from you could query them on what line X of column A on page Y of
book Z reads, letter for letter and punctuation for punctuation. That
way it could possibly still stand within the fair use laws

passed in europe..:-(

yeah.. luck.. 'bout three years ago, I read about echelon, and started
exchanging joke emails with a friend.. containing various "key" words
(better not name them in front of americans ;). some days later I got an
e-mail from some unknown adress, warning me that they'd never let off of
me once they had me. spooky!

so I guess we're all under supervision now ;)
