As an example of what I am getting at, take a look at the costs for Damage
Compensation in the Shadowtech book. (p 24)

Level Price
------ -----
1-2 25K/Level
3-5 50K/Level
6-9 100K/Level

It's a silly question, but how do you figure cost then? Does a level 6
D>C. cost 600K NuYen or perhaps 300K NuYen???

(You could argue it either way; if someone has some "official" word on
this I'd appreciate that, too).

P.S. Nice to be back on the list. :)

It isn't silly lots of people scratch their heads trying to figure out
exactly what those sychos that wrote the rules were talking about when
they put pen to paper so to speak.
LVL - 6 = 600,000 =Y=
- 7 = 700,000 =Y=
- 9 = 900,000 =Y=
- 4 = 200,000 =Y=
- 3 = 150,000 =Y=
And so on

Actually, If I remember the answer from Doctor Doom's latest Q&A with the DLOH,
it's supposed to work like this.

Level 1 = 25,000
Level 2 = 50,000
Level 3 = 100,000
Level 4 = 150,000
Level 5 = 200,000
Level 6 = 300,000
Level 8 = 400,000
Level 9 = 500,000

You'll notice that this is quite cheaper at the upper levels, but makes more
sense than a sudden jump from 50,000 to 150,000 on one level. It makes and
even bigger difference with Skillwires. Look at the following to see what
I mean.

Level DLOH method Multiplying Method
Ess/Nuyen Ess/Nuyen
1 0.1/10,000 0.1/10,000
2 0.2/20,000 0.2/20,000
3 0.3/30,000 0.3/30,000
4 0.5/130,000 0.8/400,000
5 0.7/230,000 1.0/500,000
6 0.9/330,000 1.2/600,000
7 1.2/1,330,000 2.1/7,000,000
8 1.5/2,330,000 2.4/8,000,000
9 1.8/3,330,000 2.7/9,000,000

Notice the big difference in price for levels over 3? It will change the nature
of your campaign. I've seen numerous characters with Skillwires 3, but I've
never seen one with Skillwires 4. That's probably because we use the
Mulitplying Method.

As a GM I'd say go with the more expensive option. =)

This question has been put to the DLOH (that's Tom Dowd, the Dark Lord on
High, for any newbies who might be reading this), and his answer was that
each level is paid for separately whenever it has a "per level" cost and,
therefore, the cost would be 300K nuyen - 25K/lvl for levels 1 and 2, 50K/
lvl for 3, 4, and 5, and 100K for level 6. Considering that none of the
rulebooks (so far) have addressed the question, a statement from DLOH is
about as official as you're going to get.

BTW, the same applies to Essence costs, so Skillwires-9 would be
(3 * .1) + (3 * .2) + (3 * .3) = 1.8 Essence, not (9 * .3) = 2.7 Essence.

Bleh. I've since deleted the one I tried replying to before where this
would make more sense but I was mailing stuff wrong.

Someone had said that DLOH (Tom Dowd) had said that if you were buying
it up one level at a time then this would work.

This is not what people were talking about with Level 6 skillwires.
You _don't_ buy it at level 1 then at level 2 then at level 3 etc.
You buy it at level 6. Thus you'd be paying the higher of the two
costs that were listed.
I can't really think of much that you'd actually buy up a level at
a time except maybe Muscle Augmentation (because it's supposed to be
Kevlar[tm] fibers woven into the muscle to strengthen them). But anything
that lists the prices as being different per level shouldn't be something
that you can buy improvements to it should be something that is completely
replaced.

When you buy it you're not upgrading it; you just figure the cost for each
set of levels. In other words, you don buy skillwires-3 and upgrade to 4
just by paying the difference. You figure the cost of the first 3 levels, add
a level of cost for the 4-6 range, then have the sureon rip out your 3s and
install the 4s. I's not an upgrade, it's just a way of pricing things.
