about Cybernetic implants as a positive factor as us Shadow Run and
Cyberpunk fans do. We have already integrated the idea into our
potential belief structure as a tool for a job, not a freakish
monstrosity. Ma and Pa Kettle of 1998 don't think about that, in fact
they get turned off by the whole idea. Mechanical implants are options
of last resort.
Look at it this way. My sister just got a tattoo. A small one of a
lizard at the base of her spine. My dad flipped. Myself and my sister
both have no problems with tattoos, because it is "normal" for our
sub-culture. In fact most of the late 90's culture accepts tattoos on
one level or another. But 25 to 30 years ago only sailors, criminals,
bikers and other such outsiders had them. The people from that time tend
to still think that way.
So our little sub-culture of cyberpunk fans loves or can accept the
concept of cyberware no problem. I think we only realistically represent
what, maybe 1% of the population. Including anime fans, bio technicians,
prosthetic limb manufactures and so on. The rest of the world wouldn't
go for cyber unless it was completely necessary. And even then on the
most subtle and un-noticeable types.
Also think of how Joe average would respond to a person with an Essence
of .3. Most of us would even be creeped out. We may play these
characters for fun, but the players still (hopefully) have their soul or
connection to reality. The closest example of a sub one essence person i
could think would be a combo of an introvert (social penalty), ultimate
stereo tech-geek (got be aware the maintenance requirements, power cell
replacements and the next big thing in SOTA), and a schizoid delusional
in full swing(the innate aura displacement). People like that would be
the ultimate examples of why not to get cyberware.
But like my sister and me with tattoos, the following generations may
grow up seeing things a might different than i do. Ten years ago, anyone
with computer knowledge was commonly seen as a nerd. While today, you
can't really get by without the minimal knowledge of computer use. Today
i may decry the concept of willingly hacking off your limbs for a
gyro-mount and replacing your torso skeletal structure in order to
support an articulating arm. Tomorrow's child might look at it as what
is just necessary to get by in their world.
