As to the addiction analogy, have you ever seen anyone with LOTS of visible
tattoos & body piercings? Maybe it's just my line of work, but I see
examples every night, including a few close friends. One of the DJs at the
club I work at has $10,000+ in ink and piercings. If that isn't addiction,
I don't know what else to call it. What does this have to do with SR? This
is body modification, and in SR many people will have this same attitude
towards cyber. Do you think that your typical accounting, marketing, law,
etc. firm would hire someone who makes Rodman look normal? These people are
discriminated against because or their "addiction". I know of a local cop
who lost his job because he got a facial piercing and refused to remove it.
That's not a job lost, it's a career gone, including retirement and pension.
People will go a long way to protect what they see as their individuality.
On another note, I once designed a character [SR2] who was a Shamanic
Adept [Raccoon] with moderate cyber who was a demolitions expert. The GM
flatly refused to allow him in his game. As this was game day, over the
phone, while I was at work, I redid his background rather than the numbers,
so that I'd be able to play that night. I made him an Earth Elemental Adept
{very similar choice of spells, i.e. Manipulation, with the same priority
choices} and gave him a very different background and personality, probably
making him a better character. I played him for some time, without ever
getting anymore cyber. He was very satisfying and fun, and I don't consider
myself a munchkin [but who does?]. Just my $.02.
