All,
I am new to this list. So I don't know if this has been discussed or not,
but has anyone seen the joke have of a weapon in Cyberpirates. The Colt
M24A3 Water Carbine. I don't know what universe anyone else lives in, but
in mine water does not compress. Firing this weapon would just cause it to
explode. The authors seen to be under the impression that the reason you
can not fire a weapon underwater is getting water in the firing camber not
the fact that it is the water in the barrel. Water does not compress, so
the force of the powder can not push the water out of barrel causing the
weapon to explode. I just thought I would throw this out and see if anyone
had any comments.

Mike

To overcome your objection, all you need to do is strengthen the barrel so
that the water will be expelled rather than the weapon exploding. Or expel
the water first (by, um, venting compressed air through the barrel?). It's
even possible that the gun is in a sealed chamber, with a sliding lock
mechanism so that the barrel is only exposed when the bullet is fired, and
that the cycling mechanism clears the water that does get out.

OTH, even with these factors overcome, that bullet isn't going to go very
far... but I haven't seen the writeup so I don't know.

On an aside, turn off the HTML tags that Microsoft Outlook is putting into
your email for you. When you email a mailing list, it's very bad form to use
anything but plain text, as not everyone uses HTML compatible mailers.

Actually, while I agree that the rifle would not work as advertised, you must
have missed the part where the air tank pushes the water out of the barrel.
The reason I do not believe it would function corectly, is because of the
big ol' wall of water at the end of the barrel. The bullet would strike said
wall, and would not travel far (like shooting into a pool or such).
The other effect being a nasty shockwave that would probably rupture the
blood vessels in the firers arms, at the very least. (Anyone that has heard of
the Glock Marine caps, that is why they were pulled off the market)

At the moment of firing, compressed air from the user's scuba-tanks is
pumped into both the firing chamber (to provide a combustion-friendly
environment), *and* the barrel, so that the round fired is effectively
travelling through air during its passage through the weapon mechanism.

Of course, the price for this is pitiful performance (the round has to
be pretty low velocity, to prevent inaccuracy and user injury due to the
shock of the air-to-water transition).

Even allowing for the clearing of both the firing chamber and the barrel
with compress air (by the way clearing the barrel is not mentioned in the
description). The bullet still has to pass through an air/water interface,
causing defection and loss of power. The damage code (6M) does not adequacy
reflect the loss in velocity. Neither is there any target modifier for
defection. It also mention the use of regular ammo.

I believe the US Navy Seals have a single shot weapon. (I don't recall if it
was just water-proof, or if it was intended to be used underwater).
