Who cares about Spice Girls' music, their new video has that Glam
Cyberpunk feel. It's overglitz commercialization that I haven't seen
since Sigue Sigue Sputnik. The (GE?) commercials about the future had a
lot of Cyberpunk backdrop in it's technology as well for even more
Cyberpunk visuals. Quest for the daring -> Does any else remember other
non-movie visual sources for the Cyberpunk genre?

Ancient cultures believed that names held great power, personal names
more so and they were guarded very closely. To protect themselves, they
answered to another name, because if another discovered their real name,
it could be used against them.
History repeats itself.

Those "future" Pepsi Generation commercials had a cyberish feel.
AT&T had some "future of telecommunction" spots about a year ago.
How about the Energizer commericials with the evil scientist vs the
bunny? :)

Hmm...You have plenty of videos out there that could fit the
Cyberpunk mold...For pure atmosphere, there's Bush's "Greedy Fly",
(Great for those insect-spirits) NIN's "Closer"...Filter's "Can't you
trip like I do"...

You can also find examples in news events...Think of Tchernobyl.
Although tragic, that exposed reactor, the fires...kinda "gloom and
doom"... Bhopal, India (Union Carbide plant)..etc..Although they are
disastrous events, the feel we got from them (Death on an industrial
backdrop) was pure cyberpunk...I think.. ;)

Umm .. reading is a visual activity, right?
So that would then include books as visual/non-movie sources! ;-)
Sure there's lots of them! ;-)

I have to agree with you about the Sp^H^H^H^Fluff Girls new video.
Very CP feel to it.
Have you seen the new Hanson video?
It too has that Grey/Washed-Out/Dark/Oppressive feel to it for a little bit
... then they go and ruin it by showing those three happy, blonde mutants.
(Actually that video "I will Come to You" reminded me more of Changeling the
Dreaming than anything else.)

How about those old Lazer Tag TV commercials with the gladiator style arena
and people on ATV's blasting each other?
That always made me think of a dark future, or at least one where violence
was even more of and entertainment than it is now.

The All-Sport spots showing the improved sports in the year 20XX certainly
fit the bill.

Almost any music video by Billy Idol would fit.

Hmmm. I consider myself a lurker, and yet I'm in the top 100. Must of been
all them NHL 205* posts...

Anyways, if you can find it, check out the "Tower of Strength" video by The
Mission (called The Mission U.K. in the USA). It is the definition of SR.
In fact the video pre-dates SR by about two years (1987 ish), but the
drawing in the back of the 1st ed rulebook is (I swear) taken directly from
the video. Inspriation perhaps?

Hmmm...maybe yesterday's Hong Kong/NY stock exchange drop the result of a run?
Acually, the vast majority of my SR plots come from reading the newspaper.
Fiction is great, but real life is so very strange.

Speaking of NIN's "Closer" you'd be better off going to your local
bookstore and checking out some of Joel Peter Witkin's work. He's the
photographer who's work "inspired" (read: "who's style was ripped off
for...") that video. His stuff makes the video look tame, and would make
some cool visual backdrops for runs.

I wouldn't exactly say that Reznor was ripping off Witkin's style, really.
I don't think Closer is all that similar to the feel of Witkins' work.
Witkin creates powerful, disturbing imagery, which the Closer video was
not, and didn't try to be on the same level...

Actually, I thought much the same time when I caught the beginning of the
video. i couldn;t stomach the Spice Girls nor the music however, and
quickly changed the channel and blanked it out of my mind...

Hmmm... I wonder is there are any SR bands that are really popular, but no

Disclaimer

These messages were posted a long time ago on a mailing list far, far away. The copyright to their contents probably lies with the original authors of the individual messages, but since they were published in an electronic forum that anyone could subscribe to, and the logs were available to subscribers and most likely non-subscribers as well, it's felt that re-publishing them here is a kind of public service.
