I recently followed a tread on rec.games.frp.cyber that got me thinking
a bit. Someone asked about doctor fees for cyber-installation. So, turning to
my handy-dandy-binder-disintegrating Shadowrun 1st Edition rulebook I
found the following (with some help from a friend):

Surgery (includes cost of surgeon):
Minor Cosmetic 1,000
Minor Evasive 5,000
Major 25,000
Drastic 250,000
(p. 145)

Okay so then let's contemplate alpha and beta ware, as per the Street
Samurai Catalog, 1st Edition (p. 99):

"Doctor's fees and hospitalization are 50 times the rates listed
on page 145 of the Shadowrun basic rules."

So we then get something like this:

Surgery Street Alpha/Beta
Minor C 1000 50,000
Minor E 5000 250,000
Major 25000 1,250,000
Drastic 250000 12,500,000

NOW, let's take a look at the average 'payment' offered in the FASA modules-
does anyone else see a major problem here? Does it seem impossible to you
folks for players to obtain aplha/betaware?

Given that my players like to split things evenly, and there are 5 players,
we are talking some SERIOUS money exchanging hands.

Notice, however, that the p. 145 citation has the words "INCLUDES cost of
surgeon".

How has everyone else dealt with this economic dilemma?
How much (%) of the Surgery cost would you say go to the surgeon? Could
this be a way to ease the financial burden?

Hi, Minotaur,
SRII is a bit better there. Not much, tho.
Doctor fee/day for Deadly Surgery = 400
Hospital fee/day = 500

x 50 20,000
25,000
per Day.
Most people will spend about 10 days at 25,000/day and 23 days
with the doctor at 20,000/day. This comes to about 710,000 for the
installation of Beta-ware. A lot cheaper.
I do know that, out of the Harlequin module only, (and a bit of a
quick rip of the account that Daserne Securities money went into by The
Net-prechaun) my team came out with enough to upgrade all of them. The
Doctor's fee was the same for One bit of Beta-ware or a dozen, so they
re-built the Samurai, boosted the decker, and upgraded the Combat Mage.
Harlequin is good for around 12 million nuYen if you can rip Dasserne off
during the transfer. (Actually you have to rip Ehran's account, but you
have an open door into it for a brief period of time.) Harlequin
wondered why Ehran got so little from that set-up. We sure as frag
didn't tell him.
The money is there. Though, on the Bottled Demon module that
same team did the whole job for 1,300 nuYen each. But, Dia'mons geeked
Blackwing right in front of the Lone Star Captain. Made him into a
contact right then, he *hated* that elf.
It is a lot cheaper to go to the doctor in SRII. Especially for
Beta or Alpha wares. Finding the clinic is the rub. Fortunately, that's
handled in Harlequin too.

The way that I've handled surgery for cyberware or bioware is that if
the character has Doc Wagon Gold or Platinum, surgery is free, as is
recovery. Otherwise, the cost are as follows:

Minor Cosmetic 1000
Minor Evasive 2,500
Major 5,000
Drastic 10,000

The only difference between having Basic DocWagon and no coverage is
that DocWagon has better surgeons than the standard hospital.

Of course all this is for legal cyberware. In my campaigns I make a
big deal about finding equipment, including cyberware, and also the
legality of it all. For any kind of illegal cyberware (whoch is a
lot), the character needs to find a street doc and the tech itself.
Which can be an adventure in itselkf ;)
