On Technomancers in Combat:

I echo the previously voiced sentiments that technomancers are not necessarily
cannon fodder or combat inept. It is true that combat prowess is not a common
priority for Virtual Reality runners; however, I have found it advisable for
them to acquire at least one viable skill for use in battle.

My own character, Doctor Doom, acquired an Armed Combat skill from the very
beginning. Via considerable Karma allocation, by the time he was what could be
considered mid-level, his ability with a sword was markedly elevated--to a
degree it became an aspect of the character's profile and personality.

Admittedly, it was a rare occurance that he ever was in a combat situation,
although this was not due to reluctance on his/my part, rather the obligations
of Matrix running. Nevertheless, when he engaged an opponent, he was quite
capable of holding his own, once successfully terminating someone with a
submachine gun with his sabre. Presently, his ranking with edged weapons
should be considered comparable to a Master of the Sword.

Besides his sword skill, Doom also has managed to raise Firearms to a high
level of proficiency, although he has not yet had the opportunity to discharge
his pistol so much as ONCE during a shadowrun (much to my dismay and
frustration).
