I think it's partly that, partly that many people don't want to take the
time to do decking runs "on camera" since it bores everyone else
stupid...

I'd say it's allowable, for the same reasons you do, and one other: if
it's not allowable, the optional deck modes rule is useless. Who's going
to carry around an MPCP 12 deck *just to use an optional deck mode*???

Actually, an effective GM can make a foray into the
matrix one of the most interesting parts of a run if
the GM and the decker have a firm grip on the rules.
They can be very tense situations.
"BLAM!"
"Oh shit, OPEN THE DOOR, ALREADY!"
"<mumble>i'm tryin'"
"BLAM, BLAM!"
"Whoosh!<door opens>"
"C'mon!" Team grabs decker and yanks him through
door with cable trailing from datajack.
Just imagine if the decker's taking on a fortfied
datastore as his security tally goes up a touch too
high and calls in the guards. :)

With an MPCP-12, who cares? :) Of course, let's say
its a 12/9/9/9/9 deck. Put it in bod mode for a scrap
with some IC and it goes to 12/14!/5/5/5(bandwidth/2
as well for Bod & Evasion). Gonna kicka some ayass!

Depends on the ability of the GM.... as it is when I GM I've got to be in
a *really* good, almost pyschotic mood before I can handle doing a
simultaneous decking run at the same time as a combat, and if it's not in
a combat situation then the decker's going to be finsihed by the time the
players have walked 300m and said two sentences.

As if any halfway sane GM would allow a player to get an MPCP 12
deck....... The God of 'Almigthy Fairlight', so to speak.

I think deck modes are a good idea for times when the decker needs to
fight, or hide, to the exclusion of all else.

And I should say that if I ever play a decker, his masking attribute is
going to be through the roof, with sensors not far behind.... If I need
the other two I'll change deck modes. In VR2.0 you really don't want to
get successes aquired against you, which implies a shit-hot Detection
Factor, and consequently a shit-hot masking persona.

i agree. if the system can't get a success against you, then "you the
man".
mpcp-8 is a good rating for a starting decker (unless he's a meta and
you're not
using the more meta's). Maxing your masking to 8 and running a big
sleaze-8 will
give you a very highly respectable 8 det.fact., which jumps to 10 when
in masking
mode. "He the man".
