This almost seems like an analyzation of the term
"World Class" not a discussion on Intimidated GM's.

Honestly though, I find it very puzzling to be seeing
people that afraid to deal with their players. We just
started over completely because a friend of mine
ensured that we would have every adventure written for
Shadowrun and, for all intensive purposes, we are
going to run them from start to finish in
chronological order and converted to 3rd edition.

Now, I had come up with some basic things that my
players have had to deal with. First off I told them
that they could not start off with any skill over a 4
unless they specialized. Second, I told them that they
had to create characters that were just regular
people. Not full blown professional Shadowrunners.

This has proven to be an interesting set up, yet, I
found that despite the lack of skill my players still
walked all over the enemies in the adventures
(Starting with Mercurial, then Silver Angel, the First
Adventure in Harlequin and Dream Chipper; which was
the last adventure that has been run) They eat the
NPC's in those adventures when they fight them.

The reason for this is simply that it doesn't matter
what skill level the players have; good players will
find ways to win. They will use cover, they will focus
on one target at a time, teamwork and most of all:
back-up. One, and more recently, or two will always be
hidden outside away from meets and what not. The best
way to beat an enemy is to have surprise.

Anyway, I also wanted to point out that say Joe
Shadowrunner has a skill of 4 in Pistols. According to
the book he is "Skilled" in the active skill.....What
happens when he adds 4 dice from his combat pool? He
becomes "World Class" right? Joe Shadowrunner is now
as good as Mr. World Class Shadowrunner. However, Mr.
WCS doesn't need to use any combat pool. And may
actually survive the fight because he can soak/dodge
the bullets coming at him.

This is what my players use Combat pool for, saving
their ass. And when that is not enough, Karma. And
they never really have to face anything too tough for
them. Everything is on par with what is in the
adventure being run at the moment. But numbers
(ammount of enemies and so on) can change everything.

Yeah, the player who uses Monowhips has a skill of 7
in Monowhip, but he rarely ever uses it. That is
because he typically encounters more than one opponent
and that first one may drop but the second may
certainly get him, and that is a chance he doesn't
like to take. Why? Because he is the support back up
character. Not the front line Troll.
