Ahhh, yes. The main armament of the A-10 Thunderbolt II, affectionately
referred to as the "Warthog", is the GAU-8A...a truly terrifying technological
construction.
The gun's assembly is approximately 21 feet long, and the apparatus requires 77
horsepower to operate. The "milk-bottle sized" ammunition hurls 30mm Depleted
Uranium slugs (although it is not limited to this particular munition) into its
target with truly frightening rapidity and frequency.
The gun's recoil is such that they were unable to fire it directly down the
aircraft's main axis...it was disovered to have the rather unfortunate effect
of stalling the engines. Even with its being mounted slightly off to one side,
bursts may not be continued for too lengthy a duration, as it shall STILL stall
the engine.
As to the gun's effects on its target...well, I have seen footage from tests
and performance trials...perhaps the closest metaphysical metaphor would be
"Turn Tank to Confetti".
(please to be taking...never mind, you shan't roll it down)
