Subject: Designing new Cyber RPG - Need Legal Disclaimer
Date: Tue, 23 Jul 96 17:40:00 PDT
Hoi folks,
I'm currently designing/optimising a *.cyber rpg that is largely
a rehash of the existing SR2 & CP2020 rules & ideas. I like the ideas
behind these games, have enjoted playing both, but I find their rules
cumbersome, patchy or otherwise unsuitable for my style of play. I've
got a definate idea in my head about how & why things work, and when it
is complete it will be a very thorough rules system. My deadline is for
it to be completed about halfway through september. When it is complete
I will freely distribute it.

What I'm asking you guys for is a suitable legal disclaimer: The
system is heavily derivative, I only ever intended it as an alternative
rules system, so it probably uses a lot of trademarks & intellectual
property. I would like some disclaimer that acknowledges the correct
source of these trademarks, and respects their ownership, while still
acknowledging my hard work. I'm clueless on legal stuff, and I would
appreciate if any of you out there could forward on something
appropriate.

Also if any of you know the proper E-Mail addresses of FASA &
R.Talsorian, could you send them on ? I'd like to inform them of my
intentions too...

Help appreciated.

Richard.

sorry, wet blanket time. I would strongly advise against contacting
them. You are likely to get a 'we'll sue you...' letter. TSR regularly
sends these out to people who write in with a 'I have this adventure, i
thought you'd like...' type letters. I'd consider anonymous
distribution, but if that stuff happens much more, Ok . TSR shut down a
site about a year ago for copyright infringement, and people have been
running scared (speculation) since then. Licensing is an option, but
would be cash intensive, and require a lawyer (and more money).
Admittedly, I have no expertise in this area, but I saw the messages when
TSR shut it down (AGENA?). TSR is a little more aggressive, but don't
expect a friendly 'hey how are ya' if you write to the companies. Their
product is essentially paper, and we know how easy it is to copy a piece
of paper, especially if you don't mind black bars on the pages. I've got
some concerns along the same line as that FASA person coming online
soon. I wonder If they'll try to shut it down, or try to nail that BBORC
that I keep trying to get in on.

Failing that, you might ask FASA at a convention how they kept Ral Tal
from sueing them? Less invasive a question...

Good luck with it.
