For what it's worth, detect enemies is intended only to detect *immediate*
hostile intent from the targets it senses *directed at the subject of the
spell.* If someone dislikes you and is plotting against you, the spell won't
detect him, unless he's planning on pulling out a gun and shooting you on the
spot. Likewise, if a target is planning on pulling out a gun and shooting the
guy next to you, the spell won't detect him because his hostility isn't
directed at you personally. Thus the example of the spell failing to detect
the stereotypical disgruntled gunman, since his hostile intent isn't directed
at the subject of the spell, even if he is spraying everyone with a hail of
lead.
The spell's parameters are fairly narrow, for the most part.
