Except that in the future all you will have to do is apply the glaze and
microwave it, not use the archaic and difficult process they describe.

Archaic and difficult? As I recall, the procedure was simply this:
1) Put non-flammable thing to be coated in chamber
2) Evacuate all air from chamber, replace with methane
3) Heat (they used a plasma arc, IIRC)

The methane gets converted to a plasma and deposits carbon on the object
in a diamond lattice. SR even has the restriction of not being able to
dikote clothing, as I recall.

Not specifically, but they say that anything that can't
handle temps of around 2k Fahrenheit can't be dikoted.

Right, there is a limitation (due to the *archaic* ;-) heat process above)
that materials so dikoted must be able to withstand 1000 C, thus no dikoted
armor or materials of that sort. In reality, apply the glaze and microwave
material, can be done to just about anything. Interestingly, this process
would prove to be difficult on metals, since your microwave cavity can't be
that directional and you will generate a lot of voltage (just put a spoon
in a microwave if you don't believe me).

As I said, archaic. You can put the carbon on directly and give it a
favorable energy configuration (via microwave) to transform to diamond.

The microwave is to power the nannite assemblers in the "glaze" that
actually guide the formation of the diamond film, right? :)

<Grin> You don't need such things, it assembles itself quite readily. You
just have to get to the proper energy level where that configuration is
favored.
