Per the current rules it's not possible to simulate the common cold.
If you set the damage code at something low, most people will resist it
on the first test and won't even know they were exposed. If you set
the damage code higher, odds are that it will kill them.

Here's my proposal.

Characters exposed to a disease make a Body(Power) test for infection.
If their successes are equal to, or greater than, the Power of the
disease, they are not infected. If they are infected, the number of
successes count as a negative modifier to the Power of the disease for
subsequent damage resistance tests vs the disease.

Example: A character with a body of four is exposed to a 6L Common
Cold (with an incubation period of 24 hours). He makes a Body(6) test
for infection. The character rolls one success and is infected. After
the incubation period the character makes a damage resistance test vs a
5L (a -1 is applied to the Power for the success rolled when infected).

Successes rolled during damage resistance tests vs Disease also count
as cumulative negative modifiers for subsequent tests.

Example: The same character rolls one success for the damage
resistance test (vs a 5L) and takes a light wound from the cold (he's
snuffling, has a cough, and suffers from a +1 wound modifier). He
still has the cold (since he didn't completely resist the damage) and
has to make another damage resistance test after 24 hours (the
incubation period) have passed.

However, on the next test he applies a -2 (-1 for the infection test
success, and -1 for the first damage resistance test success) to the
Power of the damage code, making it a 4L. Again, the character only
rolls one success, and takes another light wound (that cough is getting
worse).

24 hours later the character makes a damage resistance test vs a 3L.
This time he finally manages to roll two successes and beats the cold.
The two boxes of damage he took will heal naturally (the character will
continue to suffer from the symptoms until the damage is healed).

While a character is infected with a disease the may not heal damage
dealt by the disease.

Damage from a disease may be healed by the Heal and Treat spells.
However, these spells will *not* affect the disease itself, and the
character will continue to suffer damage from the disease untill the
disease is successfully resisted.

So, if you want to make a long term deadly disease give it a damage
code of something like 12L and an incubation period of 30 days.

If you want to make a short potentially deadly disease use a 5S damage
code.

That 24 hour flu would be a 3S.

Any disease with a damage level of D is classified as a lethal disease
(you would need a body of 8+ to even have a chance).
