friends,

last week there were some discussions related to deletion/compression of
old logs of the SHADOWxx lists. please allow me, to disturb your discussions
to give you some insite view on this.

- the machine where these lists are running on is not a PC but an IBM
mainframe. this means, that extending the disk-space is not as cheap as
you might expect it from a small system. additionally these disks re-
quire a rather large amount of money for maintenance costs.
- the whole system is dedicated for the Dutch user community, and i have
to justify each and every Megabyte i'm giving to others outsite our
region.
- i'm not only speaking about diskspace but also about the CPUload of
the system. during the past weeks/months more and more people are re-
questing old logs from these named discussion lists. also they are using
rather heavily the Database-functions, Gopher-service etc etc.
- i have noticed, that in October/November '93 a couple of UUE files were
send via the list, which are now also stored in the logs.
- due to the large size of the logs, i'm receiving in regular intervals
'bounced' mails from mailers which are not able to handle files of the
size of one of these logs.

please note, that i really like to keep even old logs if they are related
to ongoing discussions. however especially UUE files should NOT send be via
a list but should be stored to an anonymous-FTP. in addition old logs
have to be cleaned from time to time.

thank you
-ulrich-
p.s.: please note, that i'm not subscribed to your discussion list(s).
so please (if you feel it necessary) reply to my personal
address....
