Firstly, I would like to thank Robert (A.) Hayden for the
additions to the FAQ (the lingo especially). Cool work, but are
the dates of origin *really* necessary?

Minotaur:

The way I perceive Mind Probe working (as per Neddy's use in
Plus ca Change) as a sort of mind meld with the target that can
be quite nasty. There *should* be role playing involved in using
the spell. Analyze Truth? Different story, really. The
existence of such a spell is realistic, but yes, it does mess
with other things. I don't always take it by preference,
although Candace Sweetwater (My primary mage, y'see) *does*
possess it at a mind-staggering Force of 3. She usually uses
Astral Perception to see if someone is lying.

Compel Truth wouldn't work in SR, but in SR2, Thresholds are
no longer. So, all you need to do is exceed the target's
successes. It's really a limited Control Thoughts type of spell.

If you want to get into spells that interfere with roleplaying in
the way you describe:
Detect Enemies, Locate <Individual>, Influence, Control
Thoughts/Actions/Emotions, Mob Mind, Mob Mood, and probably
several more. The role playing comes into play in _how_ they are
used. I feel that these spells can enhance roleplaying as
readily as interfere with it.
Just some thoughts.

Nightstalker:
So, you're right about the target number. <sigh> I don't know
where or when I got Intelligence as the TN. But *still*, my mage
who buys her WP from 3 to 4 is suddenly having a harder time
using Shapechange (Owl) on herself . . . Doesn't make sense, but
hey.

Deb Decker:
My. Oh, my. Quite a cathartic post you have there. I'm sure
Ivy would love to get verbose again, but . . . she won't.
I mean, after all, she left.

And yes, I've been using that quote on her for a couple of years
now. But, she hates the book it came from, which is too bad,
because that book (and it's two sequels - All three are Strands
of Starlight, Maze of Moonlight and Shroud of Shadow. The fourth
is forthcoming, and it's called Strands of Sunlight. I _highly_
recommend them. All three(four) of them. Elves everywhere. Ai
Elthiai!) is one of my favorites of all time.

As for your points,

Cybered Military - Yep. She's postulating an ideal situation,
and such rarely exists. If the US Army were as efficient as she
would like it to be, do you think they'd be using M-16s, for the
Lady's sake? Especially with the 3-round burst limiter
(whatever, I ain't a gunsmith) these days?

And, yes, she really doesn't seem to understand *why* Beta
Clinic. Or Alpha, for that matter. I put in Gamma equipment a
while back to give her characters a hard time. There is a
precedent in DLOH's own novel . . . Really!

Anyway, enough babbling and ranting. I'm not forwarding your
letter to her, but then I like to live in peace. ;-)
