Von Herrn Watkins:

>>>Germany is a series of city states now: Really? What an idiot idea! I
>>have seen nothing to give me that idea so far, They do say that southeast

>Well, quoting London Sourcebook: Britain has reasonably cordial ties with the
>fragmented German states.

Although I am familiar with this referent, such information has been the source
of much vexation for me.

At the time of the writing of the original ShadowRun Manual, the description of
the future history was that the Germanies reunited following the conclusion of
the fighting of the EuroWar in 2033.

The London Sourcebook and Harlequin are an entirely different matter.
Published between the two Manuals, the information raises an innovative
perspective upon the dearth of data regarding Deutschland. They are now,
apparently, feuding petty princedoms and baronies--fractured states to say the
least. No explanation of the obvious contradiction is forthcoming.

With the fall of Communism in Eastern Europe in the late 1980s, the editors of
FASA deleted the comment regarding the re-unification of German, as they had
"already" united. No definitive reference is made to the supposed chaos or
order of the German state following the EuroWar is made--although I would
hardly consider it to be within the areas mentioned for balkanization as
depicted in the text (i.e., France, Italy, and southern Europe).

Strictly speaking as a historian, it is damned frustrating to attempt to
research a topic where supplementary materials do not coincide with previously
published texts. It would lead me to believe that either FASA did not inform
their wayward manuscript writers of the earlier data, or that they sought to
modify (read: scrap) the earlier perspective.

So, if Germany split up, when did this happen?

My own answer, which shall be explored in further postings, is that it did
not...or if so, it was a brief period of turmoil following the EuroWar.

>(France, btw, isn't fractured at all. In fact, it was one of the few nations to
>emerge from the Eurowars with anything resembling a military)

Demonstrably untrue.

According to "And So It Came to Pass..." (ShadowRun II, page 28)

"Italy, southern France, and southeastern Europe shattered into hundreds of
tiny states and returned to the inefficient city-state politics that had
plagued so much of their earlier history."

The information as to the situation in France, as depicted in the London
Sourcebook does NOT contradict the above information, which I interpret to
indicate that there is still a large northern French state (probably Sixth or
Seventh Republic) which enjoys such chilly relations with England.

Auch von Herrn Watkins:

>Germany is fragmented into several states, France is strong, Switzerland is
>fine, Italy's condition is unmentioned on that page at least, the Eastern Bloc
>has fragmented, but still mostly under Russian influence.

>Any more questions??

Yes. By what powers of deduction do you draw such a conclusion regarding the
potency of the French state from a short treatise on Anglo-French relations?
