And unless you want to really hurt someone that's ALL you should use.

Storytime - 1992, just out of college. I organize a small Fantasy LARP in my
hometown. We have about 10 people playing.
My younger brother wants to play an archer, and THINKS he's found a safe way
to do so.
He has taken light dowel rods, and covered the head with a
just-larger-than-a-softball NERF ball.
We test this contraption using a 25 pound recurve bow, and it does not hurt
at all.
We wrap the assembly in a solid layer of duct tape, to ensure that the stick
won't pop out.
We take head shots, face shots, front and back body shots - none do any
damage, and so we rule that the Archer will be allowed.

However, we neglected to try CROTCH shots in our testing.

We played this game at an area called "Thompson LEDGES."
I was standing at the edge of the top of a large outcropping, looking out
for the enemy.
Approximately 10-20 feet below me, the Archer has snuck up and takes aim at
me.
His shot connects solidly with my nads, and drops me instantly.
I was lucky to not fall off the rock.
I was lucky not to be NEUTERED!!!

Now I suppose that you COULD make a bow that does ONLY stun damage, but IMO
it's still gonna do some SERIOUS physical damage!!!

I would say it was a very good shot possibly above deadly stun. and you had to
roll one heck of a soak not to go unconchious. So yea it was stun damage.

And a perfect example of how stun damage could overflow into physical,
regardless of how carefull one was being. Although I have only one question
for mr Tinner... Considering that you KNEW you were going to be beating on
each other with tape wrapped rattan, with the possibility of a rouge low blow,
HOW COME YOU WERNT WEARING A CUP???

<SNIP STORY THAT MAKES ME WINCE JUST THINKING ABOUT IT>

I don't do larp but a viable solution might be to pick up one of those
NERF bows. Maybe wrap the whole thing in rough twine or rags or
something to give it that groovy look, and it might work OK. I imagine
you could probly get one at a yard sale or something, I see them all the
time down our way.

Ya know, the SCA war archers use similar stuff, but the rules require that
anybody to be shot at must have a lot of required padding, like crotch padding
and a helmet with bars closely spaced enough to keep the arrows away from the
face, etc. --Anders (onetime seneschal of the West)

Yup... In fact, down here in Caid your not allowed on the field without a
good cup period. Archers or no archers.

I thought that was SCA-wide, just as part of the general fighter
regulations?

Hmm... I do belive your right about that, Nexx. Both the minimum allowed
diameter for an arrowhead or thrusting tip and the max spacing on the helmet
bars, etc, are all spelled out in the fighters handbook, which IS SCA wide.

It sure is, but I wasn't going to bore people with the whole SCA shtick
