Ok, so I dont know when, or if Drakes will appear in the cannon shadowru
game, but I've decided that they'll appear in mine, with the option for
PC's to play new charecters that are drakes, and convert current
charecters into drakes via SURGE. I'm going to be carefull with this, as
I dont want the entire party playing drakes, but its too good an opotunity
to not to play..

anyway, I was wanting to sit down and come up with the stats etc for this,
and was looking at the EDDragons.pdf sourcebook with the stats for drakes.
I'm not sure on conversions for stats etc, although a lot of the abilities
seem easy enough to replicate. I'm also using Ryan Mercury as a guide,
granted he didnt know how to use half his powers, but its a good start. I
suspect that teh shapeshifter from SRComp would be a better template, but
i dont have that yet, so I'm starting from scratch. all suggestions
(especially from people who have SRComp, or who might know about drakes
:-) appreciated..

from charecter creation point of view, I'm going to say that you have to
take race as highest priority, then magic.

from the race point of view, while drakes (according to the EDDragons
sourcebook) can change into any metahuman race, I'm going to say that the
mana level isnt high enough for this yet, and that they are stuck in
either ther drake form, or thier original metahuman form, otherwise they
could be way too powerfull straight off. I'm also going to use the same
excuse for abilities like "dispelling" and regeneration, although
following the explanation in the dragon heart trilogy, I will allow them
to banish spirits. they will be dual-natured creatures, but I'm not sure
if ishould allow them the aura masking, or if they should initiate to
obtain that. any thoughts?. they will gain spell use, and astral
perception (I'm not sure about projection - I'm tempted to say no to that,
unless they were a full fledged mage who SURGE'd I know fully fledhed
dragons can, but they, they're dragons and these guys are only thier
servants :-).
they will be able to transform between dragon shape (gain teh ability to
fly, not sure about armour) and thier old metehuman shape. where i get
stuck is thier attributes - should they get a boost? body and str seem
appropriate, but how much? is it even balanceable to give them so much
compared to, say, a troll? also, the books hinted that his being a drake
improved his ability to heal, but would that be better reflected by a
higher body, increased healing power, or resistance to disease/toxins,
straight out of the SURGE rules?

and finaly game balance. how the hell should these be balanced? you can
argue the dual nature could be balancing, I thought of tying them to a
particular dragon in some way (not sure how yet) losing the ability to
astrally project would be drawback for any mages.. this is where I get
stuck, I mean, what munthkin WOULDN'T want to play a drake :-)

any ideas/feedback people?

after reading the Dragon Heart trilogy I would have SERIOUS reservations in
allowing ANYONE to play a drake.... hell... it'd be akin to playing a
young dragon...

now before you start to say that I'm over reacting to their abilities, I
just wanna point out a few things they hinted at in the third book....
they mentioned that Ryan would be hunted.. why? because he was MORE
powerful than many other dragons! Magically speaking, the only way he
completely came into his power was through HUGE amounts of mana pumped into
him, possibly the heal spell helped him to cope with it by translating some
of that mana into something his body could readily use... but regardless,
the only conclusion you can come to is that Drakes are more magically
active/capable than great dragons!!!!! think about it! the mana level
is high enough to support a great dragon, but NOT a drake, atleast under
natural circumstances.... christ, it had to have taken the combined
energy of over 100 blood sacrifices pumped into him for him to change...
hell... I think the book even mentioned something to the effect that
magically speaking, essence wise, drakes were almost equal to, if not
beyond, dragons....

ok... so maybe I'm goin abit over board.... but if memory serves me
correctly, I'm not... don't look for balance unless you plan to through
nothin but dragons and horrors at him...

I strongly suspect that Ryanthusar is an exception, not the rule.
Perhaps something to do with handling the heart and all that.
