Only in the old RBB... In Rigger 2, drones don't have something as simple
and straightforward as that :/ The drone rack has also been dropped from
the modifications, and since I'll have a player bugging me about one soon,
here is my take on it, in Rigger 2 stats:

If I'm not mistaken,a drone rack consists mostly of an auxiliay entrance
with maybe some launch / retreval gear and an umbilicus for charging the
stored drone or whatever. That sounds like something you could
fabricate from standard materials and tools- I'd make the materials
pretty avalable, with no street index, and only a shop required. Or are
you working from stats in the old RBB? Then again, I though a fair bit
of the stuff in there was off as far as instalation work goes. The
labor time looks good, though.

Are drone racks visable when not in use? Also, not that there are many
body ZERO drones now- people might want racks for those, and they won't
be free, as you have them.

I looked up the stats in the RBB and tried to convert them as close as
possible to R2 modification stats.

> Are drone racks visable when not in use?

The RBB stats never made any difference between visible and invisible
mods, except for pop-up turrets...

> Also, not that there are many body ZERO drones now- people might want

I'd forgotten about those. Okay, here's an adjusted write-up:

Drone Rack
A drone rack can contain a single drone in a ready-for-launch position
inside another vehicle. The drone can be launched from the rack and
retrieved by it during normal operation of the "parent" vehicle.

Drone racks can be mounted either exposed or concealed; the latter
launches the drone through doors in the launching vehicle's body and hide
the drone and rack from prying eyes. With an external rack, the drone is
visible from the outside.

Launching a drone requires no tests, but does require two Complex Actions
by the occupants of the vehicle: one to activate the drone, and one to
launch it. The drone then moves at either the vehicle's current speed, or
the drone's stall speed, whichever is greater. Rotorcraft can be launched
from a stationary vehicle.

Recovering a drone requires a Handling test to be made for both the
"parent" vehicle and the drone; failure on either of these tests means
there is a collision between the drone and the vehicle (see page 50 of
Rigger 2 for determining damage).

I thought the old drone rack could mount multiple drones.

How about storing extra drones in a `cylinder' or `magazine'. The
cylinder would cost more and take up more space, but you could pick
which drone you wanted to launch (good if you carry different types
of drones). With a magazine rack you have to launch them in
sequence.

Now that is a wonderful idea .. any idea on the design specs for it?

I'm just feeding Gurth. I haven't worked with R2s vehicle design
rules yet.

Uh, sorry to drop in late, but the R2 stats for drone racks is on p. 144.

I've only used them three times myself, but never having used a set of
rules is no reason for me not to tinker with them :)

All the description in the RBB talks about is "THE drone" (my emphasis, of
course), not "the droneS". That makes me assume it can hold only one
drone, unless you install a few racks next to each other.

So why not just, in game terms, install two or more drone racks into one
vehicle and, in roleplaying terms, say it's a single rack with a magazine
of some kind?

Damn! This is another one of those editing frag-ups! Page 144 starts with
stats for something or other, and the header "Drone Rack" is immediately
below those stats, in the exact same typeface... Not to mention there's a
table in the middle of it.

Not to mention that racks for body zero drones are FREE if designed into
the vehicle. Then again, it is just a fancy "window", and the vehicle
gets a security mark up.

Can drone racks be used for NON-flying vehicles? I could see driving by
a target and releasing a high stealth ground snooper...

Why not just buy multiple normal droneracks - the space required would
be similar, and redunacy + simplicity = reliability. Plus, you
mightlaunch more than one drone at a time, if that is allowed- iwould
think you could order drones to launch en mass.

Check this one out .. instead of using a drone rack for drones, use the rack
to hold weapons instead ... as it would have a number of hard/firmpoints
equal to half the body of the carrying aircraft ... just a thought ...

David, that is entirely unfair. Teasing us like that, here we thought you
were having another of your wonderful, and orginal, ideas (ewg).

Seriously, Rigger Humor aside, it would be interested to "clip mount" drones
into a staging rack, but that would something, IMHO, best left to larger
vehicles (you know, like BIG planes or boats).

Well, I suppose if you fitted the drones with a discarding sabot
casing to facilitate quick loading...

Isn't that an idea .. stick a drone into a cannon shell (has to be a body 0
drone only) and then lob into the area where you want a drone to be ... give
it a parachute ... the shell could either fragment itself releasing the drone
... or the drone slides out the back before the cannon shell slams into
whatever it is about to hit ...

Thanks for the wonderful idea ... the guys back here are gonna hate me even

Oh, one thing, never, ever try to get hit with an anti-ship missile ... 30D

Nice idea, Mike. My GM will have a field-day with this.
(Artillery-fired drones, yikes. Aren't they doing this already with
some applications? And what sort of effect will this have on Desert
Wars?)

BTW: Anti-ship missiles? Was this a ship/boat getting clobbered, or a

Currently under development for reconnaisance. Fire a shell over the
target, it deploys a parachute and transmits back what it sees until it
hits ground.
