question of how I know about Icewing and Dunkelzahn. The answer is that I
don't. :-) They are educated guesses, though some guesses are pretty
well-supported.
The coloration of Dunkelzahn matches Mountainshadow (and likewise, Icewing
and Ghostwalker's colors match). Mountainshadow has always taken an interest
(an almost obsessive interest) with metahumanity, much like our favorite
talk show dragon. Mountainshadow had a servant (possibly a drake) named
Darktooth, which translated to German is Dunkelzahn. (He might have found
this particular name humorous at the time, considering he awakened around
the time of Lofwyr, his German rival). Mountainshadow also saved many
metahumans and protected them in his lairs during the Fourth World
"Scourge", so it seems that he opposes the Scourge, and specifically wants
to protect metahumanity from the Horrors. Thus, we have motive and
coincidental similarities, though one can never be for sure.
A lot of this information is gleaned from Dragons, an Earthdawn Sourcebook
(free for download) that never made it to the presses. There are more hints
during some exchanges between Harlequin and Dunkelzahn, and a lot of the
questions are addressed in the conclusion of the Dragonheart Trilogy.
Icewing's information is detailed in the Dragons sourcebook, too, but his
Ghostwalker moniker comes from YOTC. Read the comments from the "council" of
great dragons for more insight. It is speculated that Denver's great spirit
(which is fragmented) is actually the spirit of his dead lover, which is why
he chooses to lair there (he had his mate's spirit trapped into a soulstone
or something similar... the other dragons abhor the practice), but this more
personal speculation than actual canon. As for his return, it is mentioned
that he has a telepathic link to Mountainshadow, being his brother...
perhaps he heard Dunky's dying scream and "homed in" on it to return to the
"Material plane" (to borrow an AD+D term)... maybe he escaped the low mana
level by existing on an elemental plane.
