My theory is that he faked it, having seen the death of JFK as an example.
(There are too many JFK references: apparently the explosion occurred in
front of the JFK building, JFK was mentioned in the Will, and the=
resemblance
of a charismatic figure dying to leave a clear mandate for his VP that would
actually probably make the VP *more* effective at carrying out policies.
I'm pretty sure Dunkelzahn planned the whole thing, and is in hiding until
the next election.)

I've considered that he faked it as well, but it seems unlikely that
he could pull it off without even his fellow dragons knowing.

As for the death of JFK, there are several connections between the Kennedy's
and Tir Na Nog. That could have been the result of an immortal
trying to take power.

This could have been a message given the above circumstances.

Even if he was killed, he might have planned it. It's possible that
D knew someone would take him out.
