I do believe that covers the advantages to being a Magic User. So far it
sounds like a good deal doesn't it? Well it's a trade off. They have
advantages over the rest of humanity, but those advantages come at a cost
which I will cover here.

Magic Users are a conduit through which Astral Energy passes into the
Physical World. That's where their power comes from, and it's also where
their greatest weakness is. Mages automatically filter out the Infection
from the Astral Energy they use. There is no conscious thought and there is
no way to turn it off. And it is this filtering process that brings the
Infection into their bodies.

The Magic User has a threshold for the Infected Astral. Once this threshold
has been passed the Infection has taken hold, and the Magic User either has
to try to purge himself of the Infection (see my last post for details on
how to do that) or accept the fact that s/he is dead. Keep track of the
Force Rating of every spell cast by the Mage. Once the Force total exceeds
the Magic User's Magic Skill (this does include Initiate Ratings) multiplied
by six, the Magic User is Infected. An Infection can also occur when a Magic
User botches a Drain Test.

Can you say ouch? Yes there are considerable drawbacks to playing a Magic
User, but when you take into account how beneficial using magic can be, it's
a trade off.

I'll be back with more Living Dead...

Hmmm....just curious, where's this Infection rule come from? Granted, I'm
not too well versed in Shadowrun rules, especially seeing as I'm not a GM
and own none of the books, but, has my GM not noticed this? Or is it an
optional rule?

Just curious, as I've never heard of that before

The rule comes from my head and some horror movie marathons. I devised it
originally to explain how the dead were rising from the grave, but it has
snowballed into the key piece in the Campaign. There are just so many more
possibilities with an Infected Astral Space than with just dead bodies
running around eating the living...
