In response to the post on alternate e-mail ideas (I know, I know, I
didn't quote it!),

I'd love to, but WebTV=no hard drive=no downloading=Using this piece of
crap I've got now. I'll try to start writing down everything I respond
to and re-type it. Apologies to those whose various psychoses I may have
worsened. :-)

And this, my friends, is why the Network Computer will never work.

Well Shawn, I sympathize. At least you have an excuse for your
actions...many don't. I don't know what the others say, but until you can
get a *real* machine, (or failing that, Windows 95) I'd be content with a
line like:

With regards to Gurth saying the carp shooter can only come in primary colors:

Which is enough to tell us what you are talking about.

Your using WebTV for this? Cool...:)

I didn't realize you could do e-mail with it as well...

Of course, not being to download or save stuff kinda bytes, but...:)

Wow I was ripped off then. I got a carp shooter from a guy on a street
corner who said it was a Gurth original, but its a nice plaid design.

Take your little WebTV browser over to www.hotmail.com
There you can sign up for a free web-based e-mail account.

It stores all the mail in their own system, and DOES NOT send html.
The only catch is that you have to access their webpage to get your mail,
which isn't much of a problem in you have internet access (which you would
else you wouldn't be getting this post).

A few friends of mine use it and are happy with it.
Look it up.

If you want to be able to quote and stuff get one of the free web
based e-mail accounts like Hotmail<www.hotmail.com>; only problem being
that they don't put any rush on getting your mail to it's box ;)

That's a real good idea, Tim...

I've checked out Hotmail myself, and while it's not the greatest, it's
better than nothing...:)

Check it out, Shawn..:)

I don't understand this. Is there some problem with WebTV that everyone
must make fun of it? I thought it was just a server. Can someone please
enlighten me!

That sucks worse than having to use WP Office to read mail with...

Sounds like an awful lot of work... You could just paraphrase it a bit,
like this:

[WebTV mailer not quoting]
I'd love to, but WebTV=no hard drive=no downloading=Using this piece of
crap I've got now. I'll try to start writing down everything I respond to
and re-type it. Apologies to those whose various psychoses I may have
worsened. :-)

That way, you can at least give the rest of the list some idea of what
you're going on about. Or get an account at a real provider :)

Can you at least cut-and-paste it? That would at least be easier than
re-typing it every single time...

2nd try......
From what I understand from what other people have been saying about it,
it's one of those dedicated internet boxes.

The only thing they're good for is web browsing.

Using them for anything else is useless (or close to).

(e.g. E-mail or usenet)

Think of netscrape without the functionality or option of loading
alternative software....

[correct me if I'm way off here.....]

It's a device that allows Web browsing with your television. Since it isn't
a real computer, you have no hard drive, and no capability to do about 90%
of the stuff possible.

On the other hand, it's cheap.

WebTV is the service that provides internet access through your TV... no
computer, no modem, no hard-drive, etc.. just (I think) a box and a
keyboard. While convienient for some people, it's a problem for any
serious user.

Okay, appartantly I'm the only one using WebTV on this board, so I'll
set the skinny on it. It's this box which contains a modem and a little
cache memory (and of course the necessary gear to transmit comp. pics to
TV). It plugs directly into a phone line and AV cables to the TV. It's
Internet access ONLY. No games, no spreadsheets, no hard drive, so no
uploads or downloads. That means the browser and e-mail are only
upgraded when WebTV Networks decide to upgrade them. It's actually
fairly quick, and any moron can use it, but totally sucks to us
tech-junkies who love to upgrade everything on a weekly basis. But if
your a minimum wage-slave trying to cope with the bills, it's a fair
alternative until you can put together a computer of your own.
